For anyone interested in a more technical glimpse of a nuclear reactor and to ponder the question of "what lessons have we learned from Fukushima and Chernobyl".

Should we abandon nuclear option or go all out to build better and safer nuclear reactors? This PBS-Nova documentary "The Nuclear Option"
was very interesting to me so perhaps it will be interesting to others. https://youtu.be/eDCEjWNGv6Y

Not specific only to your post...

While nuclear ppwer plants are not without risk and 3 Mile Island, Chernobyl and Fukushima are all tragic stories, there should be as much press about the damage and health issues caused by power plants, steel mills and other factories in the last hundred years and in general the mining and burning of fossil and other perilous fuels. Equally tragic and more cases of long term damage and health issues I might guess...

FWIW and simply opinion...

I cannot disagree with the benefits of such energy but it is very unfortunate what happens when things go wrong like they did in Chernobyl and Fukushima. We have 400 other nuclear plants out there around the world and let’s hope none are ever an issue. Looking back from some point in time in the future, I doubt many will say the risk was worth the benefit but hindsight is always 20/20. But neither can we really make do without them today.

That people will pay the price of such technology goes without saying.

Thyroid abnormalities have shown up in American babies living along the West Coast, which researchers say was caused by radiation that leaked from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in 2011. The new report’s conclusions “suggest that Americans may have been harmed by Fukushima fallout,” said one of the project’s researchers, Joseph Mangano. “Studies, especially of the youngest, must proceed immediately."

I agree. Coal mines and other mining operations, especially in other less developed countries are taking lives to this day. Sulfur mines for example, where life expectancy is barely over 50 years of age if one is lucky.

Here is something that's a bit concerning since NO ONE KNOWS for sure what this is at Fukushima.... Some think it could be FISSION-FUSION ARCING ANOMALIES https://youtu.be/ghKAsipduMc

No expert. If there is that much ‘activity’ how are the cameras surviving? Perhaps that is the camera degrading??

Is that view still available today after almost 5 years?

Nuclear is an amazing energy source. The power plant changed the Submarine.

However, even with proper operation, you still have to address coolant discharge, spent rods and other components.

For surface use the steam carried by the wind.

You hear stories about health risks as Hanford sits in Southeast Washington State, and Boise Idaho is downwind.

I watched a documentary where the focus was on trying to prove the rain droplets on camera caused the effect. Problem being they were not able to duplicate the effect in the lab. It rains quite often at Fukushima and that anomaly has never been observed before that time. No one can be sure really... The live cams of Fukushima are still online but they may be too damaged at this point. http://www.tepco.co.jp/en/nu/f1-np/camera/index-e.html

Ironic but the world relies on Russia for nuclear stations now.
In April Russia started building Turkey’s first nuclear plant, worth $20bn. Its first reactor is due for completion in 2023. Rosatom says it has 33 new plants on its order book, worth some $130bn. A dozen are under construction,
