Strong vote here for speakers first. Please describe your room, music, and listening levels.

That's not good advice. Speakers first.

Thanks - thats sort of what I am unfortunately concluding based on unanimous responses here.

They were claiming sort of sort of philosophy of prioritizing ‘in to out’ (ie investing closer to source first, then preamp, power amp, and finally outside to the speakers)

75-85% of the end result are speakers/room interaction. The rest is icing on the cake providing your amps are able to drive the speakers to levels of your expectation. Anyone who tells you differently has obviously not been in the hobby long enough to figure that out or has an agenda.

I have the 800D3 speakers and have heard the 803’s - there is a significant difference between the two and I would suggest going for the 800D3’s ONLY if you have a nice big room otherwise step down from there as the 802D3’s are also fantastic speakers.

Good luck!

Its a fairly large open space/great room that is openly connected to the front door entry - the general seating area is something around 30’x30’ or so with a fairly vaulted ceiling. The main listening distance would be anywhere from 12-23’ or so.

I am thinking/hoping the space is sufficient for 800’s, recognizing some treatments for the reverb may be in order.

Yep that should be sufficient and yes treatments will help. I haven’t heard the 611’s but did hear the previous 601’s and preferred the 1.2KW’s as the 800’s like the extra grunt. Definitely go mono block amps if you can afford to - you’ll appreciate the speakers that much more...
