Well, the thunderous passages thundered like crazy without being an over-pedaled mess: regardless of the density of passages, every line was crystal clear, and she played with seeming effortless ease. The few quiet passages in the outer movements as well as the sustained ones in the middle movement were just breath-taking. Overall, her approach was very similar to her recent DG recording, though she took the last movement at a faster tempo. The orchestra, conducted by Lionel Bringuier, a new name to me, played magnificently, too. The crowd responded with a roaring ovation.

She did sign CDs after the concert, but I had to leave at intermission, as SF is 90 minutes away from me, and I have to get up early for work. The second half, Henri Dutilleux's Metaboles and Ravel's La Valse didn't appeal to me that much, anyway. I will make a determined effort to meet her next time, hopefully in a solo recital.

Thank you John.
I would have loved to see the Ravel though...

Listening and watching now to:

C.P.E. Bach & J.S. Bach - Ascension Oratorios
La Petite Bande, Ex Tempore, conducted by Sigiswald Kuijken

J.S. Bach: "Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen", BWV 11
C.P.E. Bach: "Die Auferstehung und Himmelfahrt Jesu"

Sophie Karthäuser · Patrizia Hardt · Christoph Einhorn
Christoph Genz · Jan van der Crabben · Stephan Genz

Recorded live at the Church of St. Nikolai, Leipzig, May 2004

Although this is a simple DVD, image and sound (DTS) are very good.
As is the performance.
Kuijken seems to gather good musicians and singers on all his recordings.
The quality of his Bach albums is consistently excellent.
Nice to also see him at work here.

Listening to . . . Hector Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique, Le Roi Lear, Op. 4 (King Lear)

Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra - Marek Janowski, Conductor

One of the best sounding SACD's I've heard lately - Excellent performance, superb sound quality. The on-line audio magazine - The Audio Beat lists this as one of their top four SACD's.

I love the music of Berlioz and this recording reminds me why I do . . .

A Pentatone SACD, recorded in 2010

One of the only piano players I know of, who looks as good as she plays . . . You are one lucky man John.

I am green with envy

Yes, and she's an animal lover, too, so there's a lot to admire. I just heard the last movement of her Schumann Concerto with Esa-Pekka Salonen on the radio--wow! I immediately added it to my want list.

Listening to . . . . J. S. Bach - Mass in B minor

A Philips three LP box set

Academy of St. Martin in the Fields - Neville Marriner, Conductor
Margaret Marshall - Soprano
Janet Baker - Soprano & Alto/Contralto
Robert Tear - Tenor
Samuel Ramey - Bass

The music of Heaven, sung by angels. Really beautiful. Wonderful voices, sounds so good it brings chill bumps to this old boy.

Very good Philips sound and the extraordinary playing of The Academy of St. Martin in the Fields. I have several different recordings of this music, but this one is so good, I find little reason to listen to others and compare. This set is good!

This is a fabulous record . . .

Listening to . . . Stokowski - Rhapsodies
Liszt - Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2
Enesco - Roumanian Rhapsody No. 1
Smetana - The Moldau, The Bartered Bride Overture

The RCA Victor Symphony Orchestra - Leopold Stokowski, Conductor

Great sounding record! There was something about Stokowski that made the music he played sound a little more technicolor than other versions of the same music. Made him very popular among the masses and detested by more polished classical music listeners.

But square peg that I am, I love his music.

An RCA Living Stereo LP - Recorded in 1961 and also available on SACD

. . . .

Default Schubert: Symphony No. 9

This is an SACD on the Swiss Tudor label. Nott offers a performance that stays close to the score (all repeats are also observed) yet is filled with the details of a thoughtfully considered interpretation. Recorded sound and perspective are natural. In short, a good, though not obvious, top choice for this great 'Great' symphony. (I understand the Fischer version is excellent too, but I have not heard it)
I'm listening to this disc again: the great Schubert 'Great' Symphony No. 9 in C major

Great performance and excellent SACD sonics

A little wake-up music: Bartok Concerto for Orchestra
Erich Leinsdorf and the Boston Symphony on RCA Living Stereo vinyl,1962
I picked this up at an estate sale and other than a couple of ticks here and there it's in great shape. A stirring performance and good sound.
