Who Makes McIntosh XLR Cables?

I am wondering if anyone knows for sure who makes the McIntosh branded XLR Cables? I'm am trying to settle a bet between myself and another audiophile friend. The loser has to pick up the tab at a local steak restaurant.

While a friend and I were witnessing a large monoblock undergoing final testing during a McIntosh tour several years ago, I discretely drew his attention to the cable being used to connect the amplifier to the signal generator. We got a chuckle when it was nothing more than an ordinary garden variety IC- or so it strongly appeared to be.

I won the bet. I told my friend that an OEM manufacturer makes it for McIntosh and he said they make the cables at the factory in Binghamton, NY. We are going to the Capital Grill on Wednesday night, his treat. Thank you all for the help.

Of course it is about the money. Take Monster Cable for example.

Monster Inc. is an American company that manufactures and markets about 6,000 products, but is best known for audio and video cables. It also produces speakers, headphones, power strips, mobile accessories and audio devices for automobiles. The company was founded by an audiophile and engineer, Noel Lee, in 1979 by experimenting with different ways to build audio cables. It grew by doing demonstrations to convince the industry that audio cables made a difference in audio quality and by establishing relationships with retailers that were attracted to the cable's profit margins.


Tests done by audiophile publications, news reporters and academics reached conflicting conclusions on whether more expensive audio or video cables like those from Monster make a difference in audio or video quality when compared to generic cables. Instead of advertising, Monster offers incentives to retailers and their salespeople to sell the cables. Retailers bundle high profit-margin cables with larger purchases that have smaller margins in order to improve profitability.

My friend and I went to the Capital Grill on Wednesday night. We had a great time drinking and eating. I insisted that I pay for my meal, so my friend paid his share and the entire tip. Seeing that the bill was just under $250.00, I felt that was the fair thing to do. The drinks and food was absolutely superb and we shared many laughs. A great evening.
