I realize this post is quite old, but I have gone back and forth: with more toe-in you get a deeper soundstage but sacrifice width, with less toe in it is wider, but less deep. A standard is what is suggested in the manual: have them converge at a point a few feet behind your head.

The measurement of having the bass panel 1 inch further does not indicate how close one sits to the plane of the speakers. In a triangular near-field set up, you could have the speaker toed-in 30 degrees or more, and still have the both ends of the panel the same distance from your head.
