Blue ray players, the next 8 track?
Eventually we will be downloading video at 1080p from the internet.
VUDU - Home What do you think the future holds for blue ray players?

Jesse.......As much as we enjoy our computers, and use them daily, many people still are not computer literate, and equally as many who use computers that are not truly computer savvy. My attitude is it will be quite a long while before streaming 1080p high definition video from the Internet will replace the simplicity of the basic Blu-ray player across the land. Blu-ray has not yet overcome the basic DVD player that is thoroughly entrenched in American's homes.
For the leading edge group, streaming 1080p will probably be embraced immediately, but for mainstream DVD viewers I think the DVD player and Blu-ray player will have a long life span. Heck, there's still a large group of folks watching movies on VHS tape. That's my take on your question. I am sure opinions will differ.

You should also consider that BD is not just a video format, as VUDU and NetFlix/Amazon streaming would like you to believe - but is the only way to deliver lossless soundtracks. Not to mention the video on BD looks far superior than a 1080p streamed source.
BD is a long way away from replacing DVD, but it's also a long way away from disappearing - at the very least until every home in the US has 100mbit+ internet connectivity and net neutrality remains in place. It takes a lot of juice to push 1080p content with even a lossy 5.1 mix, and even a majority of broadband homes in the US are not capable of properly streaming (it will buffer - a lot - which takes away the "on demand" as they are advertising).

I think DVD and Blue Ray are going the way of VHS very soon. You guys assume that the average Joe cares about the video quality like you do. They just want to see the movie so if the can get it streamed rather than have the physical disc they will be happy.
Within the last year the five closest video stores to my home have closed, two Blockbusters and three misc. Blu Ray will stick around like SACD and vinyl but it will never be more than a niche market. Jim |

I see all digital media as a dying format. Streaming will take over soon.
Of course, the original media, vinyl, is here to stay!!! |

Streaming cannot provide the quality a 50Gb disc can provide, at least not now. It's usually compressed with noticeable artifacts. The bandwidth is not large enough. Perhaps in 5 years we can stream blu-ray quality video and audio. But by then, purple-ray would be out already

I have over 100 VHS tapes and play them regularly, I just don't buy them anymore unless it's a concert worth keeping that's cheap and unreleased on DVD. I once thought about digitizing them with a $150-or-so unit but I can't catch up with my audio tape digitizing needs, so - guess what? I'm gonna watch VHS with audio thru my main rig as as well as continue to play cassettes. I'm looking for some silver to go with my Marantz to complete the retro approach aesthetically! As far as Blu-Ray, I can appreciate the quality, but plan not to re-format until they stop producing regular DVDs.

Speaking of VHS tapes, we still use them to record TV shows everyday. It's a 33-year-old technology, but it's reliable!

Tommy........Yep, Marlene still uses VHS to record her favorite soap, General Hospital. Personally, I wouldn't waste the tape.
