I only have few d2d records, but this is my favorite and is still one of the most realistic sounding guitar recordings that I own.

I'd love to find a copy of that. So far no luck.

I think I have every Sheffield direct to disc LP ever made. I have not listened to any of them for years. As I recall the only one that was musically interesting to me was one by Dave Grusin. I remember in the early days of stereo some guys listened to things like trains, jet aircraft, steam whistles and so on. I always felt the Sheffield stuff was similar to that - a gimmick.

Direct to disc = live recording
I have many discs I listen to in my rotation that are very well played and recorded. Gimick? I think not.

Jim

Jim - Direct to Disc LPs are not just any live recordings, but those that were recorded an entire side at a time directly to the LP master disc. Most live recordings are made to tape, and either analog or digitally mastered. D2Ds are pure analog direct to LP recordings. They were popular in the late 70s, and there are some currently being made again. They are generally considered to be the purest and best sounding LPs, although the available titles are very limited so the content may not be to everyone's taste.

Chad Kassem's team at Blue Heaven Studios has produced a nice collection of blues in D2D format that he sells via his Analog Productions. I have quite a few and they are wonderful live sounding performances.

I understand that, but to me the D2D recordings are the true live cuts with no chance to cut out bad material. It is what it is, mistakes and all.

Jim

Jim, you are absolutely correct in that a direct to disc is recorded an entire side at a time with no chance for editing. Many artists refuse to make them for that reason, since it may require several takes to get right or it catches a less than perfect session. The point I was trying to make in my previous post was that not all live recordings are made direct to disc, in fact most are not.
