Default mc2205/

i just received my mc2255 yesterday in the original box undamaged.hooked it up to my kenwood kc-x1 pre amp, i noticed that i have to turn the gains on the amp almost all the way up, and have to turn the pre amp twice as loud as before .. sounds great just wondering if this is normal.

I highly doubt that is normal. I had a 2105 and barely used the gains.

The rear panel input sensitivity switch may need to be set at the 0.75V position with the Kenwood preamplifier. The 2.5V setting is recommended when used with McIntosh preamplifiers.

IIRC, the 'normal' setting on the gain pots on vintage McIntosh amps is all the way up.
My first McIntosh amp, those many years ago, was an MC2255. It was not very reliable and the dealer took it back as soon as the MC7270 came out (think he got tired of my complaining about not having my amp).

According to the manual, output voltage of Kenwood KC-X1 is 1.3V which would be better suited to using the Mac's 0.75 input sensitivity. This should provide much better gain structure between the two units.
