I'm guessing that they aren't yet offering any discounts on the MC462 (since the amps aren't out yet). At an added $2226, I would give it some hard thought. The MC452 is universally well regarded among McIntosh fans, and the MC462 is still an unproven commodity; not that it won't be great, but, possibly, it might not pan out to be the classic that the MC452 is destined to become. Just saying that the MC611 and MC1.25kW don't seem to have left their predecessors in the dust. Then again, I am well aware of the "what ifs" that are involved when purchasing stereo equipment. Either way, you will likely be happy when all is said and done. |

I love the McIntosh sound. I have owned an MC402 and now have the MC275 which I really love.
I bet this one sounds great but I have no intention of buying a 115 pound unit ever again. Just too inconvenient to move around, even if its just once every few years. |

Bet they used a pair of 'em for that old Maxell Tape ad from years ago. :-)

Not try to hijack the thread, but I noticed in the service manual for the Mc402, that the dynamic headroom was 2.1Db, but the Mc452's headroom was 1.8. Might the Mc452 be a slightly modified Mc402? (Loving my new Mc452!)

quartersaw,
The MC 402 and MC 452 have completely different circuit designs. The MC 402 and the 602 that I have are balanced designs whereas the MC 452 is quad balanced, lowering the already low distortion and further reducing noise. Both are great amplifiers. Tom

Starting with the MC452, McIntosh simply came up with their own description to identify their balanced amps.

Correct. First fully balanced design was the MC1000.

Correct!

You are correct. I looked at the block diagrams of the 402 and 452 in the owner's manuals and they are practically identical. Quad balanced appears to be a marketing invention. The only significant difference appears to be the use of thermal trac transistors in the 452. Also you can bridge the 402 and you can't the 452. Thanks for the correction. Tom
