difference between C-42 and C-46?

I've been mulling over and poking around another preamp for a second system, to match with the mc352.

I currently have the c220 with the mc252, so I may just end up getting another c220. I absolutely love the c220....Love it! But I thought it would be nice to try out a different Mac preamp and maybe even save a little money on the used markey, in the process.

But I've been considering several Mac preamps. The c41, c42, c46 and now the c40 (thanks to this thread ).

It will be for two channel. Musicality, smoothness and good tone controls are the main priorities. Of course I always like a little touch of warmth, too

Any suggestions?

These are all good choices, but wth the MC352, I think I'd rule out the C41...not that its a bad preamp, but in the interest of truly doing the 352 justice I'd go for really any one of your other choices. I auditioned a C42/352 combo when they forst came out and was very impressed. That's a SWEET combo! And of course, you know I'd endorse the C40 any day of the week, especially if you want a 10K eq control and the 20WPC monitor amp. The C46 is a fine preamp, but of course you'll pay more for that (and you'll lack that 10K control and monitor amp). If it were me, (and already owning a C40) I think I'd be leaning toward the C42.

P.S. And oh yes, you'll get loads of smoothness and musicality with either the C40 or C42. I've never auditioned a C46 so I can't vouch first hand for its sound...though I've no reason to doubt it in these areas.

NMyTree.......I would agree with Pete. The C42 was manufactured and released the same year as the MC352, and is a perfect mate for that amplifier. The money saved buying a C42 will not cause you to suffer any performance loss what so ever.

Yes, I was even going to go on to say that the C42 and MC352 were pretty much intended to be together. The same could also have been said about the earlier C40/MC300 combo.

I have a very diverse...eclectic taste in music. I have way too many life long loves, that were recorded or mastered .......less than ideal, lol.

I owned a Mc352 and auditioned the C42 with it. C42 would be my pick too. The two are made for each other. I kinda like the older look too.

No problem at al...it's my/our pleasure! Although the C42 is a superb match for the MC352, if the 10K is important to you (it definitely is for me as well), then the C40 is the ticket. You won't be sorry.

You can shed any concerns about matching problems, sonically or cosmetically. The only real cosmetic disparity will be with the front panel end caps. (you could even get a pair of the C42-like end caps to match the amp, but this will result in a slightly wider overall width....not really noticeable unless you have the preamp directly on top of the amplifier).

Don't worry...the C40 will feel right "at home" with any of the more "modern" McAmp models. As you can see, I'm doing just that, and I'm happy as a lark!

I gave the system a workout last night, and I had a "blast" !!
