Another issue though I guess you could call it crossover design, are the relative levels of the other drivers to the tweeter. Slight changes in key areas - upper mids or the weight region for instance - change your perception of the tweeter. IME if you want to know what a driver sounds like you need to hear and evaluate it in free air with no crossover. After that what you hear is implementation. |

Aint this fun. I'm obviously switching from acoustic suspension to port. Any thoughts on Wilson vs. Magico bass and the bass of a few other highenders (Rockport, B&W, Mac if it wouldn't change the thread too much). You'all are so knowledgeable and have heard so much more than I have regarding speakers.

The bass on the Rockport is out of this world - the best I've heard and not by a small margin. I just heard the entire line back to back at the Rockport factory 2 weeks ago and they all go deep and have tremedous texture, detail, weight and true extension.

Trponhunter, great to hear from you and thank you so much for your interest in me. I feel very comfortable about my purchase becasue I was able to have that hour with you on the phone. What a fantastic dealer you are. Now I desire to ask those of you who are knowledeagble about Magico bass. I have read the Q5 has a very extended low bass response. I have seen the specs on the Q5 enclosure and I don't see how this is possible without electronic equalization. As the frequency response of any sealed system dips below its resonance frequency, the frequency response plunges. With ports the frequency response is linear to at least above the tunning frequency of the port. I know that this frequency is 24 Hz with both the Altair and the Maxx 3, but what is the resonance frequency of the Q5?

one difference between ported and sealed is the rate of rolloff below that frequency - it is half - or 12db per octave with sealed systems (Although there is a proprieatry loading system with Rockport which also allows the por ted system to roll off at 12db/octave).
Also, with low frequencies, it is very room dependant on what you will get and perceive in the room. Also if the bass is not linear, it will change your perception greatly of the low end response. As an example - The Sahsa is spec'd at 20 - 22khz - room averaged response plus or minus 3 db. The Rockport Mira 2 is spec'd at 35 - 20khz - plus or minus 3db. On the surface of the spec, you would think the Sasha goes lower. But in my room, where I've had both speakers, there is no doubt that the preception is that the Mira 2 goes lower. So, getting a true handle on bass response of these systems is more that tuning frequencies and specs (since the specs are not really consisitently measured - "rom averaged response"-or anechoic - or not specified, as an example) - and since rooms themseves are very different, comparing in the same is realy the most telling - or perhaps listening to a particuliar speaker in a variety of different rooms and circumstances. |

I was teetering between a pair of Wilsons and the Magicos. Wilson won.
