Ok, will do. Despite having the 88 in my setup, I still believe the 09 is a good unit.

After a bunch of thinking, if you're still interested in the 09, you're welcome to it. I'm no longer sure I'll use it again, and it would be nice if someone else benefits.

Let me know what you think. Thanks. Can you do PMs?

An interesting opportunity has emerged for a comparison. As mentioned in jdandy's 4K thread, my 88FD is on the fritz; the disc tray wont open, either by remote or the open/close button. I have removed it from the system and re-installed my 09FD while I decide whether to move on from the 88 or get it fixed (still not sure, leaning toward the later).

Putting the 09 back in, I was amazed at the difference in sound, namely the weight and impact of the low frequencies. The 09 uses Wolfson DACs, the 88 ESS Sabres. Even allowing for the empty capacitors needing to get up to snuff, this was an obvious difference. After more time, the sound has cleaned up and is still impressive. I recall that one of the few complaints against Oppo players in reviews I read was a lighter tonal balance, due to the ESS Sabre DAC. The Wolfsons offer a richer sound and I'm enjoying the re-acquainting process as I play various content. I think I might be missing a bit of detail, but will need to move to my go-to tracks for better evaluation of that. High frequencies were present, but not as prominent as with the 88. And I don't know how much time the 09's capacitors need to be fully charged; I have only about 2 hours in so far. I have an Oppo 83, but never spent much time with it in the system (less than an hour) as it connects directly to the TV for more casual, "quickie" viewing usually.

I do know that if I buy the UDP-LX500 that will increase the urge for a 4K set. That is a dangerous place to be.

The 09 is sounding so good right now I may not put the 88 back into the system even if I fix it. Not only richer, but detail is emerging, based upon playing my go-to Yes Live at Montreaux DVD again. I noted the sheen of the cymbals last night, for one. As to video, maybe the 88 is a bit better with DVDs, but I'd have to test that.

Meantime, I'll enjoy the 09.

Have you tried going into the 09’s settings? There are some very fine tuning or bypass settings. It’s been eons since I did mine but I recall bypassing all the settings to where it passes what’s on the disc unaltered and has extraordinary visual purity.

Other than using "Source Direct" when I went through an outboard VP to my TV, no I haven't. Thanks for the tip. I'll take a look.

Checking my 09's settings, I have the output resolution set to 1080p.

On another note, I discovered that the Pioneer LX500 uses an AK4490EQ DAC. Anyone have familiarity with it? If so, how is it compared to Wolfsons or ESS Sabres?

UPDATE: the repair of my 88FD is $318.73, plus the $95 estimate. I'm going to let them fix it. But I'm still not sure it won't be the odd player out when it comes back.
