As the owner of a C-5xeMP, I'm curious if anyone's made the comparison or jump to the DX-5. Having the DAC functionality seems nice.

I've heard some extoll the C-5's Redbook playbook over the DX-5, and some like everything about the DX-5 more (Jeff Fritz of Ultra Audio comes to mind, IIRC).

Anyone think it's a good move?

jax4736,

Originally, I was going to upgrade my Ayre QB-9 to the Ayre DX-5, but given the fact that it is rumored that an Ayre R-series DAC with multiple inputs (other than Asynchronous USB) is forthcoming sometime towards the end of this year, I have had second thoughts about upgrading to the Ayre DX-5.

I have A/B'ed the Ayre QB-9 with the Ayre DX-5, and have to say (in my humble opinion) that the Ayre DX-5's onboard DAC does indeed edge out the Ayre QB-9 in overall performance. That being said, I'ed love to see/hear how an Ayre R-series DAC matches up with my Ayre KX-R preamp.

At this juncture, I'm considering 2 combo options for my sources:
  • Ayre R-series DAC, Ayre C-5xeMP, and OPPO BDP-95; or
  • Playback Designs MPS-5, and OPPO BDP-95.

In my opinion, whilst I'm not saying it is a bad move to go for the Ayre DX-5 (it is an outstanding piece of gear!), given that you already have the Ayre C-5xeMP, and if you're not a hardcore videophile, you might want to wait a bit for the Ayre R-series DAC (especially if your preamp is the Ayre KX-R).

My preamp will be KX-R soon I think. Considering getting KX-R/MX-R at the same time, so might pull the trigger around summertime or so.

I've heard the rumors about the R-series DAC too. It wouldn't address DSD, but I guess the C-5xeMP could still do that...

And no, I don't care about the video part. My listening room and theater are in separate rooms.

Interesting rumor.

Would be nice if the rumored R series DAC had wireless connection too..........

What about upgrades to the MXR? Sounds great, but could use just a tad bit more help on the bottom to be perfect

Since I have a good number of SACDs, I would be interested in hearing more about the supposed "softness" in SACD playback.

I know nothing about this new dac, but I know Charles Hansen once said that wifi was detriment to sound quality, so I wouldn't bet on it being implemented ever in an Ayre R product.
