for 2014 stereophile recommends for entry level headphones the sennheiser momentum with the audioquest dragonfly v 1.2 usb dac

Why don't you just go for the Audio-Technica ATH-M50x? Most headphones review sites, Headphones Unboxed for example, would recommend them as their top choice within that sort of broad price range. The extrem audiophiles might not agree with me, but most "regular" people love them, and unless your dad wants something different (such as Bluetooth headphones or whatever) I can't see any better choice.

Some great suggestions so far. For home listening without a headphone amp, for closed headphones I'd also recommend checking out the NAD Viso HP50 and the AKG K550. The NADs are designed by Paul Barton and have very good sound, decent isolation and are lightweight and comfortable.
