Default More pics of XVX Installation

Here are more pics with some comments: I believe Ivan will soon rotate these pics. The first pic shows minimum ceiling clearance. It's better than I could have ever hoped for. There were two mistakes made on the installation. These pics show the second mistake. When the men went out to Wilson in Utah, they took a comprehensive 2 day course. These were very competent techs, not wet behind the ears. However, they were not completely shown how to lock the modules down. The second pic shows the upper small midrange module out of its correct detent position and slid all the way forward on top of the lower large mid. The third pic shows the detent on top of the lower mid and the upper midrange spike out of position way too far forward. Fourth pic shows the lock down screw obviously not right touching the metal connector as a result of the out of position spike. Fifth pic shows the detent spike of the small mid correctly setting in detent 4. Sixth pic shows the lock down screw as it should be, locking the small upper mid down and way far away from the metal connector.

Default Here are the pics of XVX installation

Here are more pics with comments:

First, second, and third pics show the result of my labors. It's all really good because I understand my speaker very well now. Initially I was blown away by the lack of distortion, the tremendous power and pace of the raw un-corrected XVX. I never heard anything like it. The sound now is much more refined with still the lack of distortion, tremendous power, and pace. The men came right out the next day (required two trips) to correct these mistakes, every time I discovered one of them. Also the XVX is absolutely thoroughly locked down with every table accounted and every knob tight. There is an excellent photo in the OM showing all color coded connections at rear of the speaker. Taking nothing for granted I carefully checked all of mine against the photo.

The fourth pic shows the detent of the upper block large (7") midrange module and the spike of the tweeter in the correct detent position 6.

Fifth pic shows there is no lock down screw for this detent and spike but it is the way the large heavy 7" mid encloses the tweeter that effects the "lock down".

This sixth or last pic is a straight on view of the junction between the upper block and lower block. The metal slot is on top of the small (4") or upper mid. This slot has no settings and is totally inaccessible. The sixth pic shows the result of screwing down the lock down screw behind the 4" mid into the proper locked down position and the spike now tight to the metal. This large screw is behind the 4" midrange as seen in the previous pic before this set of pics. Tightening this screw causes the spike shown in the sixth pic on the bottom of the upper block to press into the metal slot on top of the small mid thus securing it or locking it down.

Well there you have it folks, a real world nothing left out or glossed over or made up, XVX install made by an excellent dealer and a fellow (me) who's been in high end audio a long long time.

The install is now complete. I am confident everything is as it should be. I will be over the upcoming weeks/months giving sonic impressions of the XVX.

I can tell you right now it is a forgiving, very musical speaker. It's has tremendous power and pace. It's wonderful, honestly. Fun to listen to because everything sounds good. I don't want a speaker that's a laboratory instrument. I want a speaker that when I climb my stairs, I am eager to experience. "If it don't sound good" what's the point, I don't care how much it costs?

I got a super speaker/system that actually fits and sounds good in my room with my amplification and sources.

I'm a lucky man! Many more pics now posted thanks to Ivan under Member System Forum: Charles System

Charles
Thanks for keeping us up to date with your installation. Very impressive.

A quick question. Like some of the upgraded paint finishes (very expensive) was it an "option" to have the marking on the adjustment metal parts painted black? I "thought" I saw them painted on the XVX's at my dealer but I do not see that in the second photo in Post 73.

OOPS. I looked at your other thread and I see that the markings are in black where it says "alignment devices". That must be what I saw.

Thank you so much Jim!

The install is now complete and I am 95% confident it is correct. As with all difficulties, had "everything" been correct I would never have understood my speaker the way I do now. Difficulty overcome seems to always have a positive result. The sound is beautiful and I have to pinch myself to get back to the reality of everyday life. I simply can't believe I actually accomplished it. Seems unreal that I have an XVX to climb my stairs for. I have a lot of pics posted under Member Systems Forum that are very current. I love my new phone camera.

And thanks Ivan, for all the help!!

Your statement captioned above makes a lot of sense and well said especially when when you replace the word “speaker” with the word “life”.

More pics and comments:

I will make some comments after Ivan rotates.

First pic shows the white powder around the rivet gone. Also the smudge on the Micrometer wheel. The XVX is incredibly complex. Yet my eye has found zero blemish or manufacturing defect. The paint and metal works are perfect. Now you can say, Well that's the way it should be! but we live in a very imperfect world, and no one not even Wilson is perfect. Yet so far I have found no defect no matter how minute. Wilson gets an A+ for manufacturing methods!

Second pic shows upper block micrometer alignment reference setting on A13.

Third pic shows lower block micrometer setting of A15.8

Fourth shows the lower module block step, spike, and chronometer.

Fifth and sixth the lightning feature, lower and upper blocks respectively. The light is on its lowest intensity in both pics. It is quite bright on the highest intensity. There are three intensity levels. This beautiful lightning shows the level of detail that went into in the XVX. Again, for a speaker of this complexity to actually work as billed and sound the way it does, Wilson is an incredible small company to have this manufacturing ability.

The drivers seem perfectly matched one speaker to the other according to the Mac needles. I have never had a speaker accomplish this feat. I just registered my XVX with Wilson. It is I believe the first time for me but the XVX is my final speaker. I will never purchase another. I could imagine the expense of any repairs enormous so warranty is very important in this instance.
