Also look at an Ibis Mojo. Both in your price range loaded up (used).
Thanks for the suggestions. You don't say why these are any better, but it doesn't really matter. There are no local dealers for Ibis. Can't tell for Ellsworth. Google search doesn't show any and the Ellsworth web site dealer locator is "offline."

I am limiting my bicycle brands to those with a local dealer. I am not expert enough to support my own bike.

Ellsworth is a hand built bike, very boutique. The truth is phenomenal as a full suspension bike. It's patented design actually enables the rear suspension to aid in climbing (as opposed to pedal bob most fs bikes suffer.). It'd made with anodized aluminum and its basically bulletproof.

The ibis just feels right.

Good luck with your choices.

Now that you describe it, I think I've seen an Ellsworth. I believe my friend's husband has one. He literally has some two dozen bicycles, mostly road bikes.

Correction. There is an Ibis Mojo dealer locally. I may go visit after work today.

That is great news. The Mojo has a very nice upright posture combined with a very light carbon frame. One of the very best bikes I've ever ridden, bar-none. It may take a lightly used one to be in your budget, but well worth it.

They look cool too!!!

Good luck.

Where are you located?

Depending on where you are, I'd go in and ride a new one at the dealer first. If its as good for you as I'd suspect, you can buy a pre owned one on craigslist locally in your price range. The dealer would still be able to service it (or any reputable bike shop for that matter).

My two cents, TMMV etc.

I'm in the St. Louis area.

I plan to buy from a dealer, and will watch for closeout deals when I have the cash. I don't know enough about mountain bikes to make good decisions buying used. I'd rather just do the best I can with a dealer and not have worries and stress about it. Current thinking is to stick with the local Trek dealer I like. He might be obtaining a fleet of Trek demos later this year. There might be some good deals in that.
