I just heard the 1400 Arrays (with 2 1500 subs) at a member's place (of the audio club that I run) a week ago, and they really knocked my socks off. They're just as good, and better in some areas, than my S4700s at a significantly lower price. I would run, don't walk to your nearest dealer who carries these and have yourself an audition. You'll probably walk away impressed, and your wallet might be lighter too!

What makes you say they are better than the S4700's? Bring your speakers to this members place, connect it to their gear and then re-evaluate.

I think the imaging and off axis response is a bit better. But overall, I feel the S4700 is the better speaker. Yes, that's a great idea. I just might do that...it's far superior than going by memory.

I got to hear the 1400's and the also the 800 array bookshelf at a dealer in Daytona and I was impressed that they did not, to me have the horn sound. The 800's were really nice with strong bass from a bookshelf.

Its a shame the horn and tweeter have to be cramped by the JBL woofer. With a sensitivity of only 89db 1 watt the horns are being tamed way down. Where in the klipschorn they are free to reproduce as they should. How can you give up 15 db of dynamic range! The 1400 is only rated at 300 watts peak power or about 75 watts rms. Thats only 108 db with a 6 db peaking factor. Your Klipsch can produce that with 2 watts over the same band width with 8 watt peaks. Plus the horn design of the JBL is forcing sound to the floor and to the ceiling for dangerous narrow reflection anomalies in frequency response and distorted imaging. Of course you can treat your room, but that's very expensive and there isn't much cure for reflections below 4,000 hz with carpet. I'd reach higher up the JBL ladder or think about a pair of Cornwalls. You'd only be losing 4 db of dynamic range.

Reaching higher up the JBL ladder's not a bad idea. But the Cornwalls have; inferior drivers, horns, cabinets, and crossovers compared to the JBL Synthesis line. Klipsch is not a bad brand, but let's face it, they pale in comparison to JBL. They always have. Of course there's aftermarket products (from Bob Crites and others) to solve this problem, but that's not a fair comparison. Comparing stock to stock, the JBL is the better speaker overall. And treating a room is not that expensive if you do it the right way. THere are many low cost solutions out there.
