Audio Classics and my ML-1C's

My dad wasn't using my ML-1C's that I gave him 30 years ago. Since these were my first pair of speakers I was happy to have them back. The cabinets were in excellent shape but after pulling off the front grills the foam surrounds were disintegrated. I called Ryan at Audio Classics and he said no problem, send them over. Below are the before and after pictures. The plastic grill fasteners were also broken so I replace those with some brass ball bearing models. The holes didn't match up but that wasn't a problem moving them over a little bit. I also had to add a little piece of board to raise the male part of the fastener up so it was flush with the inside of the grill cover. Everything turned out great and tonight was the first time I played music through them. I was really surprise how good these old McIntosh speakers sound. They bring back a lot of memories as a teenager sitting in my 10' by 12' bed room listening to music on by first McIntosh audio system.

You'll never have to do them again. Mine were re-done years ago and still look mint. The new surrounds are MUCH better than the original ones.

Wow, they look like new again! I bought my C40 from Ryan at AC. He is a great guy. They are the only place I will ever buy vintage McIntosh from or have repairs done.

greekgod....Ryan is a super guy indeed. How long have you had your C40 and how to you like it? I've had mine 19 years and I may just have it another 19.

I bought mine in 2012 and I LOVE it. It is my most prized possession and I use it everyday. IMO, it was the greatest preamp McIntosh ever made. The only preamp that I want more is the Burmester 808 MK5 but it may be awhile before I can afford to make that upgrade.

Thank you everyone for the nice comments. Pete, when I spoke to Ryan he said there was a group of guys from Audio aficionado that he was going to do the McIntosh plant tour with. That must have been your group.

greekgod....glad to hear you think so highly of your C40 preamp. You and I are not alone, I've never heard a bad word about it from anyone. About the only thing it lacks is a remote control. I get around that, at least with my digital sources, with the remote controllable volume on my MDA1000.

At the time it was introduced, it was McIntosh's flagship preamp. The C40 is a fine preamp without a doubt.

mgard....the AA group Ryan spoke of was a get together that was done a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately I wasn't able to coordinate my visit with that group event. However the day after I arrived, Ryan arranged another tour for Joe (aka Joe) and I for tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday).
