The Cary Tech guys said the tube will run fine. There will be no increase in power given the circuit design. Users have reported more spaciousness and better bass. I am going to spend some more time with my Golden Lion KT88's then we'll see about some tube rolling.

I really like the looks of the red and black Cary SLI-80.

I have seen that color combo once and it is really striking. If I was ordering a new one That is the way I would go.

After several months of listening to the BAT VK-300xSE hybrid integrated amp (150wpc) have the SLI 80 back in the system. Running 'Winged-C' 6550s in triode mode (50wpc) with NOS RCA rectifiers & Tung Sol 6NS7 & Philips 6922s. Am thinking I need to try a set of the GL reissue KT-88s, though I preferred the 6550s in all the McIntosh tube gear I've run. May be different with the SLI 80. Am preferring what I'm hearing with the SLI 80 to the VK-300xSE. Coupling caps in mine have been upgraded to the no-longer-available AmpOhm paper-in-oil copper foil. Not sure what the stock unit sounds like, but this is the best sounding tube amp I've owned. Guess I'll have to find the matching phono preamp.

Nice! We seem to have a similar vintage SLI-80. I like the KT-88's The low end seems to be very firm with them. Which Phono pre are you considering?

Looks like we also have similar black & white cats. Ours is ~4mon old and is into everything. Most entertaining, though the old cat he torments is not so pleased.

Been thinking either the Cary PH 302 or the Manley Chinook, if staying with tubes, but have to read more about them. My vinyl rig has 2-tonearms, so would like one that can be switched between two inputs so am not always having to swap cables. With only three inputs on the SLI 80, the ability of the phono-preamp to handle two cartridges is pretty much a requirement since the CDP and tuner take up two of three on the SLI 80.

Makes sense....My SLI-80 has a Dennis Had installed mod that added a 4th input. Handy to have one more.

A 4th input would be nice. Have given it some thought, but having to drill or chassis punch the two holes and change the switch and the wiring make it a fair task, so will likely find a good quality external switch as I need one for the 'tuner-bank'.

Dennis installed the extra inputs on the top behind each Bias adjustment plug in. Then the selector switch was adjusted so the there is an additional switch position after AUX 2. It is not labeled but the switch turns one more click to access the additional input. They are wired with Kimber wire too...

You can see the inputs on either side just below L or R of the Bias Adjust....
