It may have gotten off topic and political, but "gun nut opinions"? Didn't that just make it personal?

Come on guys. Stick on topic.

Saying it over and over again does not make it true. Just ask Generals Patraeus and McChrsytal.
This is simply incorrect as your first paragraph is about a sporting semi-auto rifle that many, many thousands of citizens own legally and shoot in competitions around the country every week (XTC, 3-gun, etc.) as well as as for general target shooting and, more & more, hunting and home defense.

The military rifle (an AR-16, not a an AR-15) the the generals are referring to have either full-auto or 'burst' capability and are illegal for any civilian to own without a special, quite difficult to obtain, federal permit. Plus, last I checked, both of these generals had their own problems with veracity on various issues.

Good post. The 1911 is at my bedside for home defense. The dogs help as a warning system and deterrent as well. The AR-15 is owned because it is a fun target gun; but also partially due to the above sentiment. I do not think we can always count on stability and law & order --- if things were to destabilize or if the good people would need to organize against threats (foreign or domestic), I'd want more than a 1911.

No sir, this thread is actually not political enough! If you only took time to actually consider all the facts that are behind the recent wave of these horrendous attacks, you would quickly realize that the 99.9% of the gun nuts as you call us are actually in favor of all the necessary background checks and other means of making sure the guns only wind up in the hands of people who are cleared to have them for sport, hunting, collecting and other lawful uses of this hobby which is exactly what it is.

Most and I'd say 99.999% of the gun nuts are just as infuriated and saddened by the terrible acts some brainwashed extremists commit against our people and others around the globe. If it wasn't for the NRA, in fact, we would not have a background check to this day.

Now, if you do want to point the finger of blame, point it at those who really are in charge of making decisions and more importantly acting upon and doing their job to protect the population to begin with instead. Like I said before, anyone else would have been prosecuted to the full extent of the law if they were the cause of mass murder but the way it stands, those who are directly in the line of stopping certain people from doing these terrible things are not doing the job.

But, it is Father's Day after all so let's take a break away from the topic which quickly derailed itself and was not meant to be politically charged to begin with. This is a shooting sports forum and we discuss guns here. To all the shooting father's out there, Happy Father's Day, enjoy the day, get out and enjoy your hobby if that is in the plans for the day.

Americans as a whole used to view guns as tools and firearms were not so stigmatized. It has become a polarizing symbol that has become a battleground for the culture wars.

Anyway moving on...
What BS telling us not to read the thread if we don't agree. There is a fine line about commenting in a thread like this between trolling or staying our and letting the bobbleheads think everyone agrees with their position.
