HDM2 mismatch set up
With my budget constraints in mind, yet my longing to start the replacement of my front speakers to HDM2 and 802's, would it be too much of a mismatch to firstly add in the HDM4 speaker with my Klipsch L&R? Mostly for movie watching and since the centre speaker does most of the work does anyone see a real issue? I was blown away with an audition of the HDM4 and how powerful it was... But I can't audition the HDM2 at home so I don't want to plug it in only to have it taken out and sitting on the side line until the 802's come along (could be some time between drinks!) if there is going to be some strange weird conflict in sounds etc. Thoughts...

Unlikely it will be timbre matched. You may notice it when material is panning. Your processor will do its best to compensate when rerunning the calibration. There's no knowing for sure how well it will integrate but typically it's best using the same vendor & even family of speaker.

If your plan is to get to 802s and HTM2 then I think go with the HTM2. For movies it matters but not as much as multichannel music and less than one would think as long all are good speakers. Don't waste money on intermediate steps unless they are cheap enough. Just my 2 cents.

Did you mean HTM2 and HTM4?
I agree that intermediate steps are silly and you will just waste money - especially with a center channel which you cannot reuse. Maybe if you were buying two towers that you were planning on using as surrounds later that could make more sense. As far as matching, I can tell you that I bought 802 diamonds and initially had a Monitor Audio center speaker paired up with the diamonds. The monitor Audio was a much smaller speaker. I ran Audyssey multiple times at that point and did not get good results to the point where I gave up on it. I figured I was going to be one of the few who did not like XT32. However, once I got the HTM2 and reran Audyssey – it was like night and day. Now Audyssey sounds superb and much better than before and I prefer using it over no EQ. The reason I am telling you this is because your electronics may have an issue with grossly mismatched speakers (as was my case). But if you are building a system and you want to go in steps (as I am) then nothing wrong with that - just don't get discouraged if the intermediate steps don’t yield perfect results. |

Although the resales on B&W are phenomenal and you likely would lose very little on the HTM4D upon resale, it only makes sense to go with the HTM2D2 now. Why go through the hassle. I've got the HTM2D and my bro has the HTM4D and both are awesome center speakers. |
