Just a thought.
Thanks for the heads-up. I will do that today. On the feet, they are rubber.
Sounding very good with 27 hours on it last night.

I run in by listening to it. It's a chore but what to do. Patience is a virtue they say...

Tough job but someone has to do it Joe

I talked to Audio Research today about breaking in without the amps on. The sales person I talked to spoke to engineering then called me back. They said you can break in without the amps. The key is to make sure the REF40 isn't on mute.

My REF5 had 1000 hours after about a year an a half so I've decided to speed up some of the break-in. I also listen about 2-3 hours at night. I am impressed more each time I listen to it (Now at 44 hours). I can only imagine after full break-in.

That is how I am breaking in my Ref 5 right now, seems to be working. 400 hours on it and doing some pretty incredible stuff.

Congratulations on the Ref 40!!!

All of you must have dedicated music systems; mine is A/V and as such is used at least seven hours a night, mostly for watching the news, Doctor Who, Mythbusters and marathons of How It's Made.

(I'd love to convince How It's Made to visit Audio Research or Wilson…)

Joe;

I am closing in on 300 hours... I was a little concerned around 200 - 275 as the bass wasn't as good, as it was in the early hours, then I remembered your post. With 280+ hours it's really starting to sound great.

Mine is on 1,200 hours, bought in August 2010.
Preblem is the 2 of 6550 are passed their half life already.
Do I have to burn in like 300 hours again with new tubes ?

TOGA...no you don't. What needs the long break-in on the Ref 40 are the large Caps (those big honking white cans in the power supply ). Tubes break-in fairly quickly (10-20 hrs) and you should be fine. By the way, I would call ARC and ask them about the useful life of the 6550 in the Ref 40. Remember the 6550 here is being used in the power supply and not as an output tube in a power amp. So it is being driven a lot less hard than in an power amplifier. So it's rated useful life as an output tube in a power amp is 2000 hrs. In the power supply of the Ref 5 and the Ref 40 it might have a much longer useful life. Best to ask ARC about this to confirm. Enjoy your Ref 40.

I've talked to ARC on Ref40 tube life... (2) 6550 2000 hours and 4000 hours on the (8)6H30P.
