I may oversimplify but I think the internet and the damned ipod generation helped kill many good dealers & manufacturers and some bad ones. Others have pointed to other key socioeconomic issues above with which I agree that killed off some level of the good dealers and makers out there.
I also believe that many bad dealers, the kind with arrogant and/or unknowledgable salespeople and those that were downright shifty or nasty to deal with took themselves out,...and good riddance to them IMHO.
Other good dealers bet on manufacturers that either did not sell, sold too high or had undependable products over time and suffered the consequences. Same with dealers who did not catch the next wave of offerings.....
There are companies out there that have not figured out that there is an ethical, moral and market limit to how many multiples above actual cost you can reasonably charge...some of them may kill themselves off shortly...5 figure interconnects, power cords, speaker cables, grounding stations and cables, etc...come to mind.
