I keep mine on the 68 setting. It only switches the internal Lundahl LL 1931 SUT’s between its high and low taps. But I find the Coralstone matches much better yet with an outboard EAR MC-3 SUT, and the VAC set in MM mode. The Lundahl LL 1931 is excellent (especially with a Shelter Harmony), but I find that the real magic of the VAC is its MM stage. Simply wonderful. Matching SUT will always be extremely dependent on what specific cartridge you’re using - multiple in my case.
This great info, thank you! Very interesting option.

C2850 sounded broken compared to the Ref6.
I agree 100%" on a similar note I had the C3800 & A65 combo, I finally found a ref 3 and it definitely has more synergy with the A65 and the 3800 was gone.

Yes. I was completely shocked. Audio Research preamp and Accuphase power amp in my experience sound better than the Accuphase preamp.
I sold my C2850 after borrowing the Ref6 and bought the ARC.
They make sensational preamps.

I agree with mulveling, I think people move them on before they’ve really burned in.

Default Reference 6 break-in

I never believed that much in break in before buying my Ref6 but now I’m a believer. It wasn’t too impressive at “0” hours, improved greatly at 120 hours Then it really started to come alive at 450 hours.

I'm also wondering if the prior owner of my Ref 6 (that guy whitecamaross, famous for going through hundreds of amps and writing about them on audiogon) rang up a lot of those initial 520 hours idling, rather than sending signal through. He couldn't have possibly put on that much listening time with all the gear swapping. The Ref 6 I bought from him was (I believe) his 2nd, and then he got another one after that. And then later a Ref 10 - plus countless other brand preamps. Crazy! Personally I don't see how much meaningful information can be compiled when everything is changing, all the time.

Either way, I've now piled on the requisite hours myself, a few times over, and life is very, very good

And once again, thank you Steve for not buying this off of me

The Ref 6’s break in is very real and very long. A minimum of 600 hours with continued improvement up to 1,000 hours. I know some people that got frustrated with the sound quality before completing the break in period and sold their Ref 6’s. Just be patient and run it in. Don’t make any evaluations until you hit 1,000 hours in my opinion.
