Default Demo experience

I heard the XR200 driven by a MC 452 and a C50 at a show several years ago. Ron Cornelius from McIntosh was hosting the demo. It sounded really good and played quite loud without congestion or distortion of any kind. I'm sure the XR-200 would be a very good choice, especially for an all McIntosh system.

Hi Ken,

I do not think it would be much of a difference, at least in terms of actual dB difference or rather increase. For every 3db gain in volume the amplifier usually has to double in Watts for that 1meter sensitivity measurement from the the speaker. Having said that these are a pair of Monoblocks that are powering each speaker individually, I would think in fact there would be some difference.

None of Macs current speakers impress me. With the design engineers designs trying to emit equal energy for all octaves in a totally reverberant room it makes the HF output terribly over exaggerated. I guess for most men of a mature age this OK as they can't here thunder do to age and high level sound exposure. I Can still hear above 16 kHz and all current Mac speakers are just to bright. MY favorite Mac speaker was designed by Roger Russell. The XR 290, followed by the XRT 22 .

are you one of those "everything has to be flat" on the tone control guys? not trying to insult, this is a serious question.

None of Macs current speakers are on my favorites list. They explain the reasons they balance the speakers the way they do, which I find flawed. They say speakers should have equal power response over the entire spectrum. But that is not how sound is presented in live concerts and recitals with out PA systems. There is high frequency absorption taking place and musical instruments do not have linear energy either. So placing a mic to close to an instrument to capture all the energy and then playing back on a system with equal energy does not give faith fully reproduction of an instrument in our listening environments. The sound may replicate what the recording engine hears, but he is mixing the sound for midifi and lo fi systems which makes the sound over bright and overly emphasized on Macs current speakers. Give me a pair of anything Roger designed first. At least they are listenable.

Has anyone who has heard the XR200's also heard Wilson Audio's Sabrina? If so, please state your opinion on the differences.

I have not heard the XR200, but I have auditioned the Sabrinas extensively. They are extraordinary on mid range and highs, vocals levitate, acoustic and pianos guitars feel like you are inside of them. Sabrinas lack oomph on the low end, IMHO they need a subwoofer if you want to feel the bass (not just in the room shaking sense, but even in the musical sense).

You probably know that the Sabrinas are among the highest reviewed speakers under $20K or so. Many of these reviews being from places that love McIntosh electronics, but never quite seem to have time for McIntosh speakers.
