Fusion derived energy is closer than we think.
The Fusion technology, the holy grail of virtually unlimited and clean energy source is not too far away. There are a few companies making great progress. Implementation of such on commercial scales, such that it would solve the energy question forever is another story all together. We are living in the days where corporations that would stand to lose will not go down without a fight (we all know all too well and how much influence corporations have on policy makers and governments ) and obviously there are plenty of countries around the world that depend on fossil fuel way too much for their economies and stability. Here is to hoping that sometime in the "near" rather than "far" future, things will change and Fusion becomes a reality and a tremendous game changer for the well-being of the planet and its population.
In the meantime, here is an interesting development. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeffmcm.../#5f48b8001d4a |

For anyone interested in the possibilities of fusion energy they should read this book written by Apollo 17 astronaut Dr. Harrison Schmidt who lays out a very persuasive case for returning to the moon to lay the ground work for industrial scale mining of the lunar soil for the nuclear isotope Helium 3 which, when turned into fuel, would power those future fusion reactors for thousands of years.

More than welcome news if true.
But do sprouting lunar cotton seeds and Schmitt's book mean that Sean Connery will have to reprise his space cop role in "Outland II: Why Oh Why Did I Ever Leave Io?"?

Friend worked at the Princeton Center for Advanced Research (IIR the name C) for 20yr+ on various tokamak fusion reactors. As someone who worked on much easier to contain plasmas, the tokamak was a very difficult beast to control. He became discouraged and moved on to an industrial position having nothing to do with fusion research. Personally, I prefer 'cold fusion'. Cheap and easy. Controlled, earth-bound fusion is well into the future IMO.

The article above however states that TAE will be ready to commercialize their Fusion technology in the next 5 years. I guess we will see.... |
