Default AK

Thoughts, opinions on 7.62 x 39 AKs? Seems like everyone and their dog are making and selling AR and AK knockoffs.

As with anything quality is always an issue with knockoffs. I'm not saying they are all bad but I've seen some pretty poor copies.

The original AK was not without it's initial problems but once worked out, they would fire regardless of how much dirt was clogging the action. Immerse them in mud and water, and they would come out firing. Simple design, robust parts and a distinctive sound when firing round out the AK firearms.

I'd want to put my hands on a model at a local shop to really check them out.

Good luck!

The true assault rifle. Likely the most reliable ever made. Very limited utility other than home defense (or offensive). Not that accurate (minute of man at <100yd) so not a target rifle. 7.62x39 is a quite effective round at shorter distances. Some folks like them for wild-pig hunting (a pig pest in most southern states these days) as most hunting them is at shorter distances. Unlike the AR15, which can be an amazingly accurate rifle, the sloppy fit that allows the AK to be so reliable (and cheap - mostly stamped steel) also helps, along with short, heavy bullet and relatively light load, to make the AK only accurate enough for shorter distances and larger creatures.

Good point...but I guess it come down to "boys and toys"...Couple of years ago, my wife said that she loves her Glock and couldn't understand what anyone would want more than one handgun. Me.."Why do you have several dozen handbags" :>)

From some reading, there is a lot of junk sold as AKs...anyone have recommendation for quality AK?

Believe Kalashnikov is now set up to sell in the USA as, big surprise, Kalashnikov-USA. Check out their website.
