Default What happens when the GAT is gone? ...

"Like the ART, the GAT Preamplifier will be available in a numbered, limited edition of 250 units which will be sold through selected conrad-johnson dealers."

If they are only making 250, Any ideas? It looks like a great preamp and if it's better the my ET5, it must be awesome

cj ART was around for 10 years before all 250 chassis were sold, so I would assume in this market the GAT has quite a few years life.

Depending on advance in design, there maybe a series 2 in a few years. cj would have allready bought the 250 chassis's in advance.

Are you looking at upgrading Joe? Do you like it better than the Burmester 077, or just different?

cheers

I really like what I'm hearing. It's different than the 077 and I would love to compare the 077 to the GAT. It's too early to tell for sure (the ET5 is not broken in yet) but each has their strong points and I think the 077 does not have any weak points.

Joe...was the ET5 new when you got it or already broken in (i.e., used)? I believe the ET5 has those big CJD Teflon caps which require many hundreds of hours to berak in so I would wait for the ET5 to "open up/break-in" before making a comparison with the Burmester 077 or any other pre. Hope you're enjoying it

That it competes with the 40k 077 is pretty good.

teflon caps in my experience are still changing up to 1000 hours. Let me if that is the case for you.

cheers

Hi Cyril,

It was delivered to the guy I bought it from 6 months ago. It's technically used, but I believe it was used very little and is no where near broken in. It's spotless. I wish it had a timer like the ARC gear. It is already sounding better since I had pressed it into service and am enjoying it very much. I believe it will be several weeks if not months before I get the true flavor of the ET5.

Exactly my experience as well with the CT-5. Mine took a good solid 5-6 months of playing (even though it had 300 hours on it when I bought it) to really come into it's own. In fact, I'm now convinced the original owner sold it to me after only two months from purchasing it because it still did not sound very good with 300 hrs on it (and, it didn't). IMHO, he jumped the gun. He found that out because he also bought an ET-5 and sent me an email that it took over 1000 hrs to come into it's own, but the good news is he's now very happy with it.

So, I think the 1000 hr figure is pretty accurate. Interestingly, Steve Deckert said the same thing about the Teflon caps in the Decware Zen Torii.

Bottom line, it's going to get even better, Joe!

There are an increasing number of manufacturers starting to use teflon caps in their premium products,

Dealers that can actually demo inventory must have a hard time doing an accurate demo with only 50 hours on any piece. Or you have the opportunity to take a piece home for a loan, one would be going WTF??
Hard for the dealer to say trust me, it will get better after 500 or 1000 hours.

This was exactly the point that Bill, the person who sold me my CT-5 and then bought the ET-5, said to me in his email. Believe me, he was going WTF? with the CT-5, and then subsequently with the ET-5. The only reason he hung on was his friend with a GAT pressed him to be patient.

And I was going WTF? when I first got the CT-5, too...

It will be months rather than weeks, if I were to hazard a guess.

But the important thing is you're enjoying it now, and know it's only going to get better. And if I were to hazard a guess, a LOT better.

It's all good.
