I try and read up on works a bit to get some context and Brahms while often lauded for his chamber works seems to cop it a bit symphonically speaking from the musicerati for being not innovative enough.

He has a handful of symphonic works because he destroyed anything not up to his rather extraordinary standards.. Brahms symphonies stand as a testament to pure craft. This one is One.

Wonderful symphony of course, but the always excellent Concertgebouw Orchestra is conducted in a brilliant way here.
The recording is fantastic.
