Default Moon 888

Hi,

This is the amplifier that most likely to be a replacement for
my Gryphon Mephisto ( If I won the lottery). What a complete sounding amplifier.

At first I felt The Gryphon was sweeter, and did not feel extra of huge power from Moon. But many hours later once Moon warmed up. I felt the effortlessness of 888. lower noise floor creating more low level cue and details, similar to Constellation and Soulution, but still musical all the time. Tonality is neutral, sound so silky no clinical. I love this amp.
But again back to Mephisto and I still can enjoy just like the same. Very much so.

Today I will try some calmer music.
I noticed with Moon 888, I , naturally, playing mostly large orchestras and rocks, because the way its sound, clean and fast with great dynamic. This make music so much more exciting'
Let's see how it perform with calmer and slower pace chamber music or something like that.

Default Moon 888

No problem for 888 to play soft musics. Very nice.
Now I think I know the main difference between these two amps.
Both are musical and powerful.
With Gryphon, I can sit back, relaxed and enjoy reading while listening to Class A biased sound and not quite aware of what was working behind, making this music.
With Moon, all music was more exciting. I really can’t do something else, I had to put down my iPad to have Wow moment ! Music had more wow to it. More interesting, inviting me to listen to all the details in the recording. In the mean time, it was not analytical per se, all were still beautiful musics. There was no uh-0h moment which was the case when I tried Soulution 725 preamplifer with Mephisto, where sometimes on some recording, it was just unlistenable. This was never be the case with Moon 888 driven by ARC ref 40. I like this amp a lot.
Too bad I will never able to try Hercules II from Constellation. Wanna do some comparison on this new, to me, price point amplifier.

I wonder what you would think comparing the Moon to the equivalently priced Boulder.

Some find Boulders to be an improvement, others feel them too analytical and dry by comparison - but when purchasing in that price range you owe it to yourself to find out.

If you're buying a Ferrari, you really should at least test drive the Lamborghini and McLaren as well.

There are so many good audio companies.
At this price, good relationship with distributor is also
Important which I do have with Moon’s and not Boulder’s.
I am sure Boulder is a very good product and can be very good with suitable partnering equipments and speakers,

Agree. Relationship with dealer (seller) all important. I would never have a piece that did not arrive in a factory sealed box from the factory. If its it's been in someone's home, it's used as far as I'm concerned. Others may have a very different opinion. If the Ferrari dealer is local and the Lamborghini is 100 miles distant, the choice for me is the Ferrari.

Best

Charles
