I have the 205 unit - two comments - (also, the video sections of the 203 and 205 are identical) 1) I recommend looking at the AVS forum dedicated to the OPPO 205 - search the thread. I recall that the certain TV's, even when in sleep mode, would send out HDMI messages requiring the OPPO to answer. This could cause a glitch in music playback. 2) HDMI can be tricky. I run a cable box as well as a Roku Ultra into a simple HDMI switch then into the OPPO HDMI in, then HDMI out to the Samsung display. Turn on sequence is important. If HDMI 'handshaking' gets confused, you can get in a weird place. For this reason I leave the switch on all the time, but use the OPPO trigger to turn everything else on. I use the switch so all video goes through the OPPO to use the OPPO video processing. My only complaint is that OPPO could have provided more than one HDMI input on the 205.

I have now been through this scenario of the music playing in the UDP-203 with the Sony turned on and turned off. There have been no issues either way. I have no idea why your dealer's customer is experiencing the issue you reported, but my Oppo 203 and Sony XBR65X900E television work perfectly under both circumstances. Perhaps Oppo's latest firmware update addressed this issue, if in fact it was an actual issue. I am happy to report I am not experiencing any issues.

When I switched from Classe CDP-102 to Esoteric K03x, I gained enormously in the redbook sound department, added the SACD capability, but lost the ability to play the audio tracks of some fine concert DVDs that were not released on CD. I was struggling to select a unit to play the DVD audio tracks, then was pleased to hear about the 205.
I was hoping Oppo would release one in silver, so delayed the purchase of one, but when our President announced potential tariffs on Chinese imports, I feared at a minimum Oppo prices would spike, so ordered one two weeks ago. In retrospect, I'm awfully glad that I did. I don't own a TV or monitor other than the one connected to my computer, so whereas I was spoiled with the integrated 2x2" screen on the 102, I realized I would need to acquire some small LCD screen in order to navigate the set-up and audio track selections when playing DVDs on the 205. Fortunately, 'zon offers multiple inexpensive 7" monitors that seem to fill the bill. Hope to have one and listening to my favorite concerts by next weekend. |

Shortly ago, I verified the problem Robc33 reports with my Sony 75” XBR900E while playing back a Bluray Pure Audio disc.
UDP-205 > Integra DHC-80.6 > Sony Easily solved by turning the set ON and engaging the Pure Audio mode via the remote. |

damacman.......Interesting that you experience this issue with the 75" version of the Sonny 900E and I do not with my 65" Sony 900E using my Oppo UDP-203. The only thing different for me is my UDP-203's HDMI cable is connected directly to the Sony TV, not to a processor. Hmm.

Farewell to OPPO USA
I too recently read on avsforums about issues with Oppo. A lot of owners there complain about bugs associated with oppo including 203/205.
I just received my 2nd 203. I use my 203 for playing Blu Ray movies but never use it to spin cd. From what I have read, nearly all oppo players ever released have issues with dropping the first fraction of a second between tracks and at the start of a cd. Apparently it is worse when the oppo is connected to certain preamps/surround sound processors and non-existent with other SSP. When I was shaking down my D1100 doing the same thing, I used the 203 and oddly enough it did not cut off the first fraction of a second in my system .... at least not that I could detect 203 -> Yamaha 5100x -> C1100. I have seen the Panasonic DMP-UB900 and Sony UBP-X800/1000 players recommended as excellent alternatives to Oppo with the Panasonic excelling at video and Sony excelling at audio (at least in the context of A/V system).

'DVD Audio Extractor' software. I also use it to extract the audio from some concerts when there were no CD from those concerts. It is not very fast, but is worth it. You can then burn the images to CD if you want to play them in that way. The newer versions can also extract blurays!

A question about the DVD Audio Extractor software, you mention it can extract from DVD and Blu-ray. Can it also extract from DVD-Audio discs? What about SACD, I'm assuming no but curious if it does.

DVD-Audio as well, stereo or multichannel. You can check all the formats supported in
the 'Features' and 'FAQ' pages of the main CAS site. The only exception is the SACD format and that is because the bluray/DVD/CD drives found in PCs do not support it. For SACD format, there is a more elaborated solution that involves the use of an Oppo 103 or 105 and a little program installed in a USB memory card to rip the SACD to a PC. I'll track the AA thread for you.
