Default Inside or Outside

Has anyone experimented with placement of the side port on the Olympica lll ?
What are the results (changes in sound quality) of inside or outside placement?

Thanks: Tom D.

I am very interested in your thoughts about the Olympica III when you have time. I currently have the Cremona Auditor Ms with a REL B1.

The answer to that question is a tall order. They are so different from my 3.7's it's been hard to quantify their sound. The Thiels had aluminum drivers and were much more explosive/dynamic, the Olympica lll's are much warmer, organic. Some CD's were unlistenable on the 3.7's and ok on the Olympicas. As they are breaking-in the mids and highs have come along nicely, the bass is still a bit too full for me, hence, the "question" in this thread. I'm afraid new interconnects, Nordost, may be required. Tyre ll is sinfully expensive.

I did a lot of testing when I owned the Olympica 3s. But in my room the difference was minimal. I have 7,5 meters between the walls so there was no nearby corner to "interact" with for the bass ports.
I ended up having them pointing outwards, or at least that what it looks like. Looking closely you'll see that the metall mesh is just for looks. The opening sends the bass straight back along the mesh. What have you found out when testing your self?

So far the adjustments I've made have been to reduce the amount of toe-in, when delivered they were set-up in the same position as my Thiel's. By removing some of the toe-in imaging and bass response were improved. However the bass is still a little too full for me. I have not had the opportunity to change them right to left (port location).

Today I swapped the speakers so the ports are facing inward. There was a large improvement in bass detail and firmness, imaging, mids & highs are more focussed.

I found the ports facing in preferable to facing out when I demo'd the Olympica IIIs.

Did some serious listening tonight after repositioning, earlier, and let the amp warm-up. What an amazing difference in my room, I'm thrilled. My dealer didn't seem to think the ports facing in made much difference at the store. My room is 13X31 and has a rather large area on the left where the stairs are. My thought is (ports out) the room was not loaded properly. By contrast the right speaker is only four feet from the wall.

After reading this thread, I changed my Olympica IIs so that the ports are facing the inside and also had a surprising improvement in the bass dynamics and output.

My room is 17x20 with a half wall behind the listening position and I've had issues with the speakers sounding thin and weak in the bass for quite some time.

Making this change has resulted in a huge improvement and I'm extremely happy with my Olympica IIs now. Thanks for reminding me about this option.

That's fantastic Oddly enough my Thiel 3.7's had no problem with bass response in my room.
