Default Advice on a budget.

A friend of mine purchased a new home that has a theatre room in the basement.
Dimensions are 19Lx17Wx8H

He's not an audiophile and therefore doesn't see the value in spending tens of thousands on equipment and cabling.

Id say his budget is $10k.
Home theatre isn't my forte. I'm a 2 channel audio only guy which is why I've come to ask the experts.

Any suggestions on what would work is greatly appreciated.
I can tell you he's putting in a 80in LED (he cant do a projector) and would like a 7.1 setup with speakers that would be wall mounted, not recessed into the walls.

Thanks to all who reply.

Legacy Audio makes several on wall speakers. I'm looking at the Silhouettes for front and center and the Decos for sides and rears.

Anthem, Marantz and others make respectable receivers. Just make sure he goes for one of the newest ones with the latest codecs. I am adding the Marantz SR 7011. The Marantz and Legacy go into a second, smaller theater situation I am building.

A lot of speaker brands offer good 5.1 or 7.1 packages.
I think of Dali, Monitor Audio,...
Add indeed a good receiver (Brands above, but also Denon, Arcam; especially Yamaha got good reviews recently on What Hifi).
Canton has a line of very good on-wall speakers.

Mark.......I think you could do a good 7.1 speaker set up with Elac speakers, perhaps four of the Elac Uni-Fi UB5, a Uni-Fi UC5 center channel, and a pair of Elac Uni-Fi UF5 floor standing speakers for the front left and right channels. Add a JL Audio E110 subwoofer and a good surround sound receiver like the Denon AVR-X2300W and your friend would be in business for less than $5000. Add the Oppo BDP-105D for $1300 and the whole package comes in less than $6300.00.

We could go on and on about different speakers and equipment. As I'm a CEDIA installer and do many home installs. Including mine. See profile pic. I'd say decide how you want theater set up. In walls or free standing. Then go to power requirements of speakers you choose. I chose Klipsch in walls with free standing subs. You can then choose from a myriad of receivers. If brand names all are comparable though I'm partial to Yamaha. Don't rule projections out as prices have come down really low and quality has gone up. That includes the screen as well. The best way to learn what is best for you is to contact licensed home theater installers in your area. All will be willing to come out and talk to you and give an estimate. The magic word is licensed by CEDIA. If creative you can mix free standing with in wall like I did with my Aerial 7Ts. Good luck!

I would say Canton reference mix with Vento from accessories4lees hard to beat for the price charge now.

For value priced home theatre speakers, I would go with GoldenEar Triton One towers, SuperCenter XXL, and (4) SuperSat 3s. Most people feel they don't need a subwoofer with this setup.

Don't forget about the Pioneer SP-BS series designed by Andrew Jones.
