I only spent one afternoon in Chatham, but it looked very interesting.

If you want to stay closer to home, Ocean City, Avalon, Stone Harbor and Cape May, all in NJ, come to mind. OC is dry (the 'family resort') so no drinks served, but you may know all of this. The rest are wet. Also, late in the season to find a place for August, but who knows. We've been on the beach at OC several days over the past couple of weeks. Wonderful. Especially once the wind switches to an ocean breeze. Water is turning rapidly, so will be in the 70's shortly. We've been remarking on how clean the water & beaches seem this year compared to the last couple of seasons with big storms. Not just trash clean (which is it) but clean from the stand-point of seaweed and normal 'ocean debris', etc. Pick up a hoagie to split for lunch on the way. Yesterday, which was likely the worst day of the year, took about 40-50min to get to beach rather than our normal 20-30min summer drive. We are likely thru with the beach for the next couple of months as we start traveling, so there will be plenty of room at OC for you (though you will have to imbibe at your rented place).

Check out the Winstead Inn in Harwich Port. They are right on the beach.
