That is disappointing to hear. What should be the key attribute of any all in one device over other alternatives is the ease of the user interface.

I'm on the WOW! cable network at its second highest speed. Speed isn't the issue. I have had this up and running many times. It is just inconsistent. Sony recently updated firmware, software, and the Google ap. All was well for a while, and now the apps show no albums available.

Love, Hate, Like,
On my last post I was a bit down on the HAP. I have since had to reset, transfer, and sync everything. It has worked as advertised for several weeks now. I want to love this thing, and I do on its good days. I have decided instead to like it and hope it keeps plugging along working.

Any owners of this player noticing any physical or audible hum emanating from the power supply transformers or hard drive?

I've had this unit for a couple days now and the sound quality and remote control GUI are awesome! The file transfer program is simple and very easy to use. And while the player's case is reassuringly heavy and rigid, there is a physical vibration from within the machine causing the case to ring and hum.

You can stop the audible hum by simply applying pressure to the mid left side of the lid, or the left side panel near where the transformers are located. There is an obvious vibration when you gently place your hand in the same areas. AFAIK the hard drive is installed vertically near the right side of the front panel with a fan available to cool it if the need arrises. There is no vibration noticeable at the front panel.

I've only found one other reference to HAP-Z1ES hum which was in the SoundStage HiFi review:

"I suspect that the slight hum the HAP-Z1ES produced when turned on was the sound of its hard-drive motor. It was barely perceptible at my listening position, about 10’ away, and wasn’t annoying."

I ran the power through a PSAudio Humbuster to see if it made any difference, which it did not. No other issues with transformer hum in the various other components and systems I have.

Anyone else noticed anything like this?

-Steve

The software is painful... especially on a Mac. BUT....

The Z1es is the real deal. I can overlook the software because it sounds F***ing amazing. Beats every DAC and CDP I own and I own quiet a few including a DAC that cost more than the Sony. If you're looking for the best sound under $5k, the Z1es is the really deal. I can't even listen to my MacBook Pro with DAC anymore because it sounds bad in comparison to the Sony.

Honestly, I didn't want to like this unit in the beginning. Now that I've used it, this is audio Hi-Fi is about

I was all set to get one after an extended listening test with ARC gear and SF Olympica III speakers. Thought it sounded great as well

Ultimately decided on the PS audio direct stream DAC, though.

You'll notice I upgraded my opinion in a later post. Since this post in early August the HAP has been working happily. When network issues are resolved, the HAP is very easy to use, and it sounds quite good.

What is the Sony component to the right of the HAPS component?
