According to Fedex, the rig is arriving tomorrow. I'm going to take my time over the weekend to set it up.

If you haven't purchased an RCM (record cleaning machine), this is about the most effective/least expensive way to start. Not a VPI 16.5 or better, but does a creditable job for the $$. https://spincleanrecordwasher.com/

Older/dirtier LPs can benefit from a second and even a third trip thru the RCM. Even the best machines (Audiodesk & Klaudio - both ultrasonic) sometimes require this for badly soiled LPs.

congrats ylee, what TT / cartridge combo did you get ?
nice start to your vinyl journey, it will be interesting to 'hear' your comments once your up and running. Be honest with yourself, for in the long run if YOU are not impressed with analog it's money wasted that could be better spent elsewhere ! |

It's been interesting to compare the records I bought recently to digital files I have or have access to via Tidal/Roon. My observations emphasize the importance of mastering.
The Allman Brothers Eat a Peach and John Mellencamp's Uh huh definitely sound better on the turntable compared to the digital files (I have Eat a Peach on 24bit 192kHz FLAC and Uh huh remastered via Tidal). There's something oh so right about the sound of Allman Brothers on vinyl. Prince's Purple Rain sounds moderately better on vinyl compared to CD, althought the CD copy I have is my wife's from the early 90s whereas the vinyl pressing is of the remastering that was done more recently just before Prince died. The mastering for this back in the 80s was pretty mediocre. Paul Simon's Graceland is a draw between vinyl and 24bit 192kHz FLAC. The two Deutsche Grammaphon Beethoven records of Kleiber/Vienna Philharmonic performing symphonies 5 and 7 sound better to me on 24bit 96kHz FLAC than vinyl, although bass is easier to delineate on vinyl than FLAC. Edit - In listening again this afternoon (I'm working from home due to Northeast snow), I'd say it's about a draw between FLAC and vinyl. This indicates to me my vinyl rig is still settling in. I have 7 more records coming to me this week: Mozart: Mass No. 18 in C Minor by Ferenc Fricsay/Berlin Radio Symphony Toni Childs - Union Bruce Hornsby and the Range - The Way It Is Yes - 90125 U2 - Unforgettable Fire Miles Davis - Kind of Blue Bob Dylan - Blood On The Tracks I will post impressions as I hear these records.

"Thanks. I came across this in Music Direct and ordered one a week ago. Cheap way to get started with vinyl cleaning. I'll start here and work my way up later."
A nice inexpensive way to work your way up the record cleaning ladder is the Record Doctor vacuum cleaner for $199. I spin clean the record and then set it on the Record Doctor and vacuum up all the fluid. Does a great job. You will need to turn the record by hand, but that's fine with me. Well reviewed. Amazon. Eliminates the hand towels and extracts all of the fluid and suspended debris in the grooves. Record comes off ready to play. |

I'm one of the few that never gave up on vinyl. What I've found to be incredibly rewarding is to determine which format does a given album the best justice. For example, I bought all the Jimi Hendrix original remasters immediately after Experience Hendrix put them out in the '90s. This is how you listen to Jimi! OTOH, if you asked me to play Dark Side of the Moon for you, it would be via the MFSL CD - the original pressed LP being a close 2nd. ELP - Brain Salad Surgery? I like the DVD-A.
There are some records that really showcase the vinyl format - the Sheffield Lab D2D stuff for example, my fave being the Tower of Power Direct. Norah Jones first record on Classic Vinyl - sublime. Plenty of awesome new stuff to pick from as well. The QRP reissues of the first 4 Black Sabbath albums - just WOW! Mark Knopfler's recent stuff, the Fleetwood Mac and Peter Gabriel 45rpm reissues, etc. So much GREAT stuff to choose from. Have fun! Last edited by damacman; 04-09-2018 at 04:07 PM. |
