An OPPO 105 is a good player. Does it sound as good as a K-01. Almost. Lol.
I agree with you. But he mentioned the magico q7 @ 185k I believe and ... Well I guess my point is ... How does THAT help give anyone any reference on how the speaker being reviewed sounds. I think he just likes to name drop speakers.

I guess he is just comparing what to him is the best available. I have to trust reviews and opinions of people I trust. There is just no way to hear everything in your room.

Most of the gear I own has been heavily reviewed by several different sources. That's really the best you can do.

My only gripe with this review is I am not getting JVs 'compared to the best cone and horn speakers....' He has a 1300 dollar speaker here and he is comparing to the raidho and magicos?? He says Maggie's wont do depth like the best cones? Really? I mean I find what they do very very well is depth. He has had multiple reviews and always says things like 'not quite as good as the best'....so what does the best encompass in this comparison? 100k / 200k speakers? Or are we talking something like ml CLX in the 25k range - his old reference?

How do you bring up the magico and raidhos in the same review as the .7 then make the blanket statement that all Maggie's don't do depth as well as cones. ?

Any opinions on the above?
to compare Magnepan .7 with Magico and simular expensive speakers is as we say in Holland aples with pears I have a small room and the Magnepan .7 is perfect in my situation. Lokking forward to the Magnepans

Yes, I think that's it. He's comparing them to his reference standard. And, really, it's pretty flattering to a $1200 speaker to be in that company!

Still, I understand the OP's frustration -- if you're shopping for a speaker in that price range, you want comparisons to other speakers in that price range to help narrow your choice. Maybe what JV says about philosophy is of more use here -- he points to different types of speaker, including "absolute sound" speakers, and puts Maggies in that category. Which is to say there are better choices if you're after slam on pop recordings, but if what you want is something that sounds like real instruments in a real acoustical space I don't know of anything that comes close to Maggies at that price.

Maggies are great sounding speakers. And at a good price point.

Default Magnepan .7

I was going to order a pair of the .7's, an upgrade fro me from the MMG's. Then I read the Absolute Sound review which was polite and cautioned about the type of music that the .7's would be best for. Also, made me uneasy that those who loved them at the trade shows also mentioned that Mr. Diller had them set up with a hidden center channel and a couple of their woofers. When you total that system up people were listening to at least $3,000 in speakers, but seemingly writing an evaluations on just the .7's. The woofers alone are more in cost than the .7's. One dealer offered that the .7's worked best with a subwoofer, relieving the panels of some of their work. Sounds right to me. I'm sure that they are great speakers, but now I will wait until I can hear them. I caution those that are not familiar with Magnepans to carefully read the Absolute Sound review. I thought the reviewers did a great job reviewing the .7's by tempering the positives.

Thanks for closing the loop on your experience with the .7s, Peter.

I know you like salsa and merenge type music which is very acoustical with some bass thrown in for good measure, so it's good to hear that the new speakers float your boat.
