Default Moving : Temp Vinyl Storage Solutions

Hello everyone,

I need to pack my vinyl collection and put in to temporary storage for about 1-2 months

Storage will be in a family members basement.

I need ideas of what i should pack the records into. The run of the mill moving boxes seem to flimsy to use.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Thanks,

Erik

Hi Erik,
I've used these plastic corrugated LP boxes from Bags Unlimited.

https://www.bagsunlimited.com/p-3840...gatedfont.aspx

Used them in the move across the country, and once for another move a few years after that. They hold up well, and not one damaged record. Hold between 40-55 records per box.

along with RoadDawg's suggestion you could use plastic milk crates (or facsimiles thereof) available at Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, etc. Just be sure when stored in a basement (hopefully dehumidified) that they are off the floor and air is allowed to circulate

I go to the local vinyl record store and get the shipping boxes they throw away. They are sturdy, specifically designed for records, and free. Definitely keep them off the floor just in case the basement floods.

As others have alluded to, the biggest risk in basement storage is moisture. If it's at all damp or prone to water leakage, look elsewhere - mold is your enemy.

Home Depot square platic milk crates are inexpensive but just a little too small to hold vinyl LP. Their rectangular wooden crates are also just a little 2 small in the width to hold LPs

Thanks for all the replies!!

My good friend works for a chemical supply company and said he has some great heavy duty boxes that might fit the bill.. I should be getting some later this week.

As for basement, no water egress which is nice, but a little damp.

Since all of my albums are held in 5mil sleeves and will be in cardboard boxes, do i have to really worry about dampness/mold?

The Container Store has nice vinyl milk crates that are perfectly sized to hold LPs. They'll hold 90 LPs comfortably, which is also about as much as you want to try to lift and carry at one time. And they're stackable.
