As I am waiting for my Gungnir to arrive, I'm realizing that the cables hooked on to it (Yter XLR, LessLoss DFPC and LessLoss coax S/PDIF) will be around 3 times the value of the DAC.
Overkill or perfectly OK? |

Ok. Stupid question time.
I'm headed to Boston for a week, so need my laptop. At the hangar I have all the old torn apart computers. One that is currently working has only 1.1 USB. The Schiit needs 2.0. I was able to get it running continuously using a coax out from the Denon 2910, but had no ability to us a USB. So, stupid question is, does this mean the USB circuitry will not be burned in at all and that when I get back I will still need further burn in time?

Well.....
Update. I went to Boston and almost a week later came back and hurried out to the hangar to find that the system was still playing in its endless loop. I then took the Bifrost back to the manse and, after playing several tracks with the HRT II, hooked up the Bifrost to the system. First impressions is that I now have more distinctive bottom end. Not quite sure if that's good or bad, but it's noticeable. What I didn't get is smoother highs, such as when you play the Beethoven violin concerto. Still hurts. The mids are about the same. I don't really hear a difference in voices. Nothing added or taken away. Nothing smoothed out. Conclusion. None yet. It may be that the USB circuitry didn't benefit one ounce by the week long burn-in. It may be that I wasted my money. It may be that I need patience grasshopper. It's not bad, mind you. Just not a huge improvement. But, this is from a person who auditioned a $5,000 integrated that I felt couldn't significantly beat down my current little NAD. Even recognizing the limitation of my speakers, which aren't bad, I would have expected the more expensive integrated to make a significant difference. The same with the Bifrost. Not yet. We'll see.

Now either Schiit would be seriously elevated by an Audiophilio.
What USB cable and length were you using again? |

USB is a WW Starlight USB A-B 2.0M Using the supplied PC, but have a Shunyata waiting in the wings. Thought I'd try it with the standard one first, at least until I was sure it was burned in.

Just saying that most integrated USB interfaces leave a lot to be desired due to poor shielding, isolation, and clocking. Even Schiit drew a lot of attention when they mentioned that they thought that SPDIF sounded better than the USB input but they would still offer it as an option.
John Darko from Digital Audio Review almost always has much better USB results when using an external USB to S/PDIF converter. He recommends the Audiophilio and the Concero converters. For the money the Audiophilio 2 would be a great way to feed SPDIF to your DAC. They have a 30 day trial period, so you'd have nothing to lose... Great performance for the money. Elberoth gave it a 95 I believe on his converter shoot-out thread: http://www.audioaficionado.org/cd-pl...-shootout.html Last edited by junker; 04-23-2013 at 02:48 AM. |
