Tubed Preamp Consecutive Operating Time
Is there any reason to limit the consecutive operating time for a tubed preamp? Other than reducing tube life, are there any issue with keeping my Ref 5 SE on for 10 straight hours, or more?
Because the Ref 5 needs to be on for home theater bypass (they really need to change this), I may follow a 2-3 hour listening session with some TV time, requiring the pre to be on for extended periods of time. |

dminches.......Tubes are made to be used, not stored. It does not harm the tube to be on for ten hours or 20 hours or 100 hours. You are not hurting the tubes. All tubes have a finite life span and will eventually reach the end of their useful function. Just replace them at that time and carry on. Our audio gear is made to be enjoyed, not parked and fretted over.

Thanks for your response. I seem to baby tubes because of the ridiculous cost of replacing them. I realize it is a stupid approach. Maybe I just need to have a couple back up quads and forget about it.

dminches.......That is exactly what you need to do. You don't have to purchase a large stock of backup tubes, just keep one full set of the tubes you use on hand. If and when you replace tubes in your gear, then replace the tubes you used. That way you will always have what you need and there will be no down time on your gear while you wait for new tubes to arrive. Relax and enjoy your gear. You didn't buy it to just look at it, did you?

From what I have been told, and this is just someone's opinion, the Ref 5 SE bests the KX-R but not the KX-R Twenty. The KX-R Twenty is close to $30k. |

On the weekends, sometimes I leave my Ref 5SE on for 10 to 12 hrs straight. Not a big deal. I just replaced the power supply tube T 1870 hrs and the pre sounds as good as ever. Enjoy your system and don't worry about the tubes. They can be replaced.
If you are that concerned, Dan's recommendation is a great one.

I often leave both my Ref 5se and Ref 110 on all day listening to music. I have had no problems and my Ref 5 has around 1700 hours on it so far. I did remove the plastic top for better ventilation.
I keep a spare set of tubes for everything I own. Nothing like wanting to have a nice afternoon of listening and a tube goes. It can take a few days for new tubes to arrive. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst. |
