Sorry, I no longer have the 09 to compare the two. However, I never used either one for anything other than blu-ray/DVD playback. And since I strictly bitstream, I'm pretty sure you couldn't tell the difference between the two. Which is why the Oppo for $1700 less than the 09 is such a steal. Plus it's PS3 fast, and if you need it, plays both SACD & DVD-A's too.

PS3 fast, is important!
My Panasonic takes so long to boot up, you forget what movie is in it.

How does it play Sacd's, compared to other players?

To be honest, I've never played an SACD in it. My MCD500 gets all the SACD duty. One nice feature about the 83 though, is it will do multi-channel SACDs. So if I ever get the itch to listen to multi-channel, I have that going for me... which is nice.

I did watch the blu-ray of "The Punisher: War Zone" in DTS-HD MA 7.1 last night. Wow! That movie is over the top.

Haven't got it yet. Looking at a 58" Panasonic. Right now I'm planning a new equipment rack on which to put it. I'm planning on the Salamander Synergy Triple S20 with the flatscreen mount. I'll have the C500 in the center two spaces, the 2 252s in the corners, the DAC in the top right, and the cable box in the top left shelf . On top will be the turntable and the 83 with the plasma mounted about 8" above the S20.

It will be a big change for me as I have a c.a 2000 63" Sony rear projection behemoth between my speakers and my equipment to left of everything. I'll be going from about 14' to 7' of floor space for all my equipment. I can't wait!!!

.
That is why I have not purchased the MCD500= No multichannel= and not cheap. I have acquired a big multi catalog of Scad's. Once you hear multi done right, its hard to give up.
Plus my CD is still chugging along without any problems.
(Sounds great in fact.)

I suppose this is the McIntosh message (mailed a fish) to Sacd's multi technology, "it was born in a grave."

The Oppo looks like my next purchase.
I currently like the PS3 better then all my other Bluray players but it does not bitstream over HDMI. So I have to decode in it. Not sure I will hear a difference but it will trigger a few more "on" lights in the AVR.

Thanks for the write up!
