Howard... You are on the right track with your soundproofing, however keep in mind sound waves ie: sound energy like electricity will take the path of least resistance.

If there is an AC vent, outlet, small space etc the sound energy will transfer to the other living space(s)

In Florida to minimize this effect, I designed "The Room" to only share 8' of common wall with the rest of the house.

The concrete block is poured solid, the entire room is soundproofed, solid core door with a hermetic seal, and it's own dedicated HVAC.

Makes a nice safe room too!

Thanks for all the answers, it all makes sense. I am fortunate in my space where the only common framing will be the ceiling. 3 of the walls are poured concrete foundation & 100% underground. I am deliberately building a hallway with a 2nd door as an entrance and will have the gear room directly behind the front wall. So I'm mostly concerned about the ceiling. I contemplated building separate ceiling joist, but it would take the ceiling height lower than I wanted so the current plan is quiet batt insulation + isolation pads & C-Channel + 2X sheetrock with a layer of green glue in the middle.

For the outlets I was planning to use acoustical putty pads (Acoustical Putty Pads - Trademark Soundproofing) and I haven't decided yet on whether or not to spend the extra $$ on a dedicated HVAC system for the theater separate from the rest of the basement. If i use the same one, it will use flex duct and I'll probably wrap it (SoundproofCow.com :: Soundproofing Materials :: Soundproofing Barrier Foam Composites :: Quiet Wrap™ Pipe Soundproofing Wrap) for at least part of the run back.

Since my room will be pushing a more modest ~3kW , I think I'm leaning towards just drywall and adding acoustic treatments. the 18kW explains why you went the 703 route in the theater but not in the 2-channel room.


The safe room was also on my mind. I'm pretty well prepared to deal with bad guys, but Glen Burns (the local weather man in ATL) advises us to go to the basement for storms a handfull of times each year. Waiting out the bad weather while watching Nemo will suit the princesses just fine

I agree with keeping the gear away from the front as it can take away from your total immersion in the film itself, back in the 90's I had done a lot of home theatres for friends using CRT projection, about 15 setup s in all, there is nothing wrong with having your equipment in the back of the room ,you can still show it off, IR will still bounce off the walls and make it to your gear, and add the 4th dimension to your system," bass shakers" they are a lot more advanced recently but I use to use the aura shakers bolted to my furniture,, one of my kids would sit on the floor to watch a movie because it was too close to the real thing, when a tornado is ripping through your living room.

I just went through your build thread. I see that you are sound proofing your room. Smart move that you will be glad you did down the road. I did not sound proof my room and hindsight I would of. However it is just my wife and I and we are almost always in the the theater together.

I look forward to seeing your build and will keep it on my radar now that I am aware of it.

I got the building permits today from the nice ladies at the Cobb County permit office today. Lumber, insulation and romex wire order at Home Depot tonight!
