Is it possible that this design started the trend for stearate woofers in speaker systems?

I don't know if it really started it, but this was one of the early ones, for sure.

Pete, as someone who also appreciates the L212, I'm reviving this ancient thread in the hopes that you can post a photo or three of one thing in particular:

The grill cover from your Ultrabass subwoofer. I am in the midst of restoring one of these systems and I will have to recreate the grill cover. I would love to see what the opening in the cover looks like, behind the grill cloth.

I hear that the grill cover is 16 7/8" wide x 18 1/8" tall, made from MDF 15/16" thick and sized to fit into the recess at the front of the cab. Does that sound correct? What size is the opening in the middle?

Thanks!

zonker 92.....I don't own a pair of L212's, and never did. I had started the thread way back when as an item that may be of interest to some JBL fans. I was in High school, or just out of High school when this model was introduced. It was very unique at that time in terms of the satellite/sub concept.

Darn; I should have re-read your initial post more carefully. Thanks anyway!

I, too, was in high school (77-81) when this model came out, and it made a very strong impression on me then.

Here are the towers on the set I am restoring:
