If I move back to Japan, I may pick up the C-47.

Update from post 114

1988 E-205
2010 E-450 with DAC20/30/50
2013 C-2420 & P-4200
2014 DP-720 & T-1100
2019 AD-2850
2020 DC-950
2020 ASLC-1x,2x, 5x

2020 - Overhauled the E-205, reformed large caps, detox switches and sundry pots. Main volume pot is sealed.

The DC-950 is partnered with a Lumin U1/X1 PSU.
Although digital is close, when using the HS-Link from the DP-720 to the DC-950, it's about the best SQ from my system, can listen to CD/SACD all day.

My Journey to Accuphase

Hello all. First-time poster here. Inspired by other stories on this thread I thought that I’d share my journey to Accuphase.

In the late 80s/early 90s I had a pretty good system using Sony ES electronics and Infinity Kappa 8.1i speakers. This was (IMHO) the peak time of consumer electronics and the Sony ES products were well made and sounded great to my ears.

Years passed and I sold my system (one of the few real regrets of my life). About 10 years ago I decided that I needed an audio system again and bought a Peachtree Decco amp and a pair of Zu Audio Omen Dirty Weekend speakers. It was pretty good, but over time the treble of the class D Peachtree started to grate on my ears. Several upgrades later I had replaced the Peachtree with Schiit electronics: A Modi Multibit DAC, a Saga tube preamp with a Psvane tube and an Aegir power amp. The Aegir has wonderful synergy with the Zu speakers, which can sound hard and edgy if they’re not happy with the amp. The Aegir is also (as far as I know) the only sub-$1K power amp that’s class-A rated by Stereophile.

I’ve known about Accuphase for a long time, but I had never seen their amps in person or listened to one. My interest was reawakened after a series of videos on Zero Fidelity’s YouTube channel. During a recent trip to Tokyo my wife and I visited Dynamic Audio in Akihabara to see the equipment in person. One of the things that really impressed me was the build quality and the tactile feel of the knobs and buttons. It was like what I remember my old Sony ES components felt like.

During our most recent trip to Taiwan we made an appointment with an Accuphase dealer in Taipei. I didn’t know what to expect, but it turned out that they had a huge selection of used Accuphase products. (Definitely a kid-in-a-candy -store feeling.) We listened to a pair of Dynaudio Confidence C2 speakers powered by a P-7000 power any and a preamp (2800-something, I think) and the sound was simply superb. We also tested the speakers with an A-45 class A amp, but (somewhat to my surprise) preferred the P-7000. During a second visit we also listened to a E-470 integrated amp, but the pre/power amp combo was clearly superior. I had kind of hoped to find a one-box solution, but the difference in sound was bigger than I expected.

In the end we ended up purchasing a C-2120 preamp (with a DAC-60 card), the P-7000 power amp and the Dynaudio Confidence C2 speakers. We tried different preamps but couldn’t hear huge sound differences – they all sounded good. So far, the amps have arrived and we have hooked them up to the existing Zu Audio speakers. The sound is a marked step up from the Schiit combo. The Zu speakers work really well with the P-7000 and the sound is more full-bodied and wonderfully smooth. I’m sure the Accuphase engineers in Yokohama would have a nervous breakdown if they saw the cheap Pro-Ject CD player that we hooked up to the C-2120, but the main source is a laptop running J River via the USB connection.

So, what’s next? Installing the Dynaudio speakers is obviously the next big step. After that we’ll need an Accuphase CD player. I’m also curious about the voicing equalizer, but I think I’ll play around with Room EQ Wizard and the built-in EQ in J River first to learn more and see how it impacts the sound. The Accuphase DG-68 may be a beautiful unit, but using J River is a lot cheaper for learning purposes .

Thanks for indulging me in telling my story so far. I’m looking forward to many years enjoying the Accuphase units.
