Here's the Fuji X-E1 owner's manual for those interested.

Little smaller, but a beautiful camera. Has the same sensor and uses the same lenses as the X-Pro1.

It arrived today courtesy of my local UPS man in brown, and I'm just sitting here, listening to music and trying to figure the thing out.

The camera came with Fuji's brand new 18-55 f/2.8-4 zoom lens, which is reputed to be very, very good.

Took a few pictures before the light failed this afternoon, just to make sure the camera works - it did - and the pictures, while of ordinary subjects are very crisp, sharp and the colors are extraordinary.

I'm very impressed by this little camera!

Congrats, Julian! I've been very happy with my X-Pro1. I also like the "hands-on" experience of using it, having to set shutter speed and aperture manually, rather than spinning control dials on the camera body.

You're right that the XE-1 has the same X-trans sensor and same image quality as the X-Pro1 and I've found the image quality is just amazing. I personally really like the optical viewfinder of the X-Pro1, but the EVF of the X-E1 makes it just that little bit more compact. And, you've already discovered the wonderful Fuji color, which I personally find is better than any other digital camera I've used. Fuji knows color!

I've also played with the OM-D, and while the AF is impressively fast and it has a quite a good EVF, it just a bit too much like a D-SLR for my tastes, I like the retro using experience of using the Fuji more. The OM-D is quite a good camera, though.

I haven't used the Fujinon XF 18-55 OIS zoom yet, but I've read great things about it and have seen some wonderful images made with it. I will probably be buying this lens at some point in time. Here is a blog that aggregates articles from other photographer blogs using the Fuji X-Pro1 and X-E1: http://www.scoop.it/t/fuji-x-pro1 Check it out to see the quality of work photographers are generating with these wonderful cameras.

As you know, the X-Trans sensor is quite a different design, and photographers shooting RAW with it have had problems getting good conversions because of the challenges around demosaicing the data from the sensor.

Recently, Capture One just released version 7.0.2, and this application is quite similar to Adobe Lightroom, but Capture One does a markedly better job of RAW conversion than Lightroom. So, if you decide to work with RAW images, I'd recommend checking out Capture One 7.0.2.

Please post your images with it once you get out and about, love to see what you come up with.

Cheers,
Stephen

Julian,
Be sure to go to the Fujifilm web site and download the new version 1.04 of the firmware. It makes the AF performance notably faster.

Firmware for X-E1 | Fujifilm Global

Cheers,
Stephen

Thanks Stephen - I've just done just that (while watching the Super Bowl). So far, so good with the X-E1 - rapidly learning to love this little camera. Still no pictures worth sharing, mostly test pictures of brick walls, limbs on trees, clouds in the sky, etc. But everything looks GREAT!

I want to get a second lens - something prime - maybe the 35 f/1.4 (like you have) but wonder also about the 60 f/2.4 macro - Suggestion?

Your pictures w/ the 35 are phenomenal!

Thanks for your encouragement.

Julian

Get the 35...it's an extraordinary lens, one of the sharpest I've ever used, and I've used some sharp ones, including the famous Canon 200/f1.8L.

I'm still incapacitated by my knee surgery . . . but . . . gives me plenty of time to "play" with my cameras and I must say that . . . .

I AM WILD ABOUT MY FUJI X-E1

Got the 35mm f/1.4 to complement the kit 18-55 zoom, and don't believe I've ever seen sharper lenses (both of them!!!!)

Can't wait to get out and take some pictures.

Congrats on your new knee, Julian, and your new Fuji XF35R lens! It's one of the sharpest lenses I've ever used, and I've used some good ones in my time! (including the amazing Canon EOS 200/1.8L)
