Cable testing: Is it more than a simple continuity check?
In a former life, I was involved in the QA/QC process and associated testing of electronic equipment after it rolled off the assembly line. We did test cable subsystems depending on what they were being used for and what the purchaser wanted. Now that I am starting to pay for better cables, the question of what level of testing on completed cables occurred to me now that I am starting to pay for better cables.
Does a cable manufacturer simply do a continuity check and visual inspection on the cable and packaging after the connectors have been attached or do they do more such as a frequency response check or a time domain reflectivity sort of check to be able to "see" issues with the dielectric material or impedance anomalies along the length of the cable? I know that manufacturers of Ethernet cables can and do certify their cable products to meet specific requirements but am unsure of what manufacturers of purely audio cables do. Any thoughts? |

I know that David Salz of WW is very much involved in the QC of his products. An entire batch of Platinum Starlight USB was recently rejected for not meeting his high standards.
I have toured the WW factory previously and posted pics here. I find everything they manufacture to be of very high performance, as well as a great value.

It will depend on the company. Cables that come with a certificate of authenticity and serial number don't necessarily reassure me of their quality. It just looks like the company is trying to avoid counterfeits. Cables that come with a check list or test result page do make me feel like the cable has be carefully designed and constructed. Another step toward assurance of quality is when the cable includes the signature of the employee that constructed and tested the cable. Of course all of that info could be faked. It will really come down to whether you believe the company's explanation of their design goals, any focus on quality and whatever other information they offer outside of flashy, clever advertisements.

It would be unfair to name the company, but I remember many years ago buying a new pair of silver plated copper RCA cables which looked as if they had gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson when I took them out of the box. When I complained that they must be old pre-owned stock, the dealer assured me that all of the cables from that maker looked like that as they were extensively tested prior to despatch to retail. True or not, I don't know, but they were very good cables for the price.

Interesting. I don't, however, think thorough or proper testing of a cable should be physically "demanding". The dealer does merit an "A" for being inventive in his defense of the manufacturer.
