Michael.......Most "free" online virus protection is worth exactly what you pay for it. Good luck.

Michael.......Just bite the bullet and purchase Norton 360. I think you can purchase 3 years of protection and updates for up to 3 computers for around $80.00. I much prefer knowing Symantic's group of top virus protection experts are working for me with automatic updates than having some group of hacks trying to convince me to use their free software. Norton 360 offers a lot more than just Internet virus protection. It offers great protection along with useful utilities at a decent price. I think it is worth the cost.

look at hitman PRO by Surf Right. It is even more powerful than malwarebytes.org.
It is mainly a MBR, malware, spyware cleaner, but gets rid of a lot of infections, is free to eval for 30 days ... |

Guess we all have our preferences in this area, so I'll share my perspective. Not a fan of Norton's product, while it does do a good job in avoiding viruses it is way too much of a resource hog. Hitman Pro is a nice product for what it is, but it provides no active real time protection. It provides on demand scanning and is intended as a supplement to another standard full time AV solution. I like ESET Smart Security or even their more basic products. It is very efficient, provides continuous real time protection, and the company provides excellent support when needed. It's often available at significant discounts for about $10 to $20 per year of coverage.

Windows Defender is already built into W8 & W8.1.
Access it from Windows System Apps. Defender runs as a Service automatically. There is nothing you need to do. When you launch the interface, you can check status. A long as you have your Windows Updates set to run automatically, the signatures will get updated & the service will maintain itself. I agree Norton is a hog & Symantec is pushy. In the UK, I have a choice of products offered to me by banks and retailers I have online accounts with, free of charge. I use Kaspersky from a bank. But can you trust a Russian?

Some service providers in the US also provide free access to paid versions of AV software for their clients, but it is generally McAfee or Norton which are not the best choices.
