Two years ago when I heard of the news about coming fanless NUC, I was very excited. Too bad that turns out to be a BIOS setting which does not really work in real world, especially for i7. It seems a powerful out of box fanless PC is still a dream. |

That’s exactly what I am planning: to move the NUC to my closet. |

If you're willing to drop the $2k for the Roon Nucleus+, the dream can be alive and well -- they built a custom fanless case that purportedly works just fine for the i7 NUC. Not a solution for the DIY crowd, but it's a decent option nonetheless.

True, that type of custom solution must exist, but $2k is too much for a mini PC. I only need it as a server to run Roon Core, instead of a gaming PC sitting on my desk. I can use that amount of money to buy a 4x5 closet in my area

My $650 diy i7 nuc is quiet, I never heard the fan. I don't understand all of the complaints. But I'm using it with roon rock (core) , and no commercial OS.

If you were going to use the DSP functions and play everything as DSD 512 and using the equalizer functions you might start hearing the fan, but that is just a guess.

Playing the wait and see game before investing any money into Roon devices. Tidal is supposedly in deep doo-doo financially. If Tidal goes down, Roon may or may not survive making all the Roon accessories pointless. It works just fine from my PC for the time being.
