I don't understand how the 105D would improve the sound.
I believe it's an extra set of DACs for multi-channel.

The NR1607 seems to offer quite a bit of bang for its $700.

I'm curious what you ended up doing - I know the thread is a little dated, but would like to know how things turned out. I, too, am primarily a 2 channel guy and plan to finish my basement soon. My plan has always been to have a dedicated 2 channel space, but the family wants to get in on the space

I used to have a home theater (projector w/ fixed screen and 5.1) until the 2 channel bug bit me and I got rid of it. Rather than messing with a projector/screen, I thought I'd just get a 80" LED since the prices have come down so much on big TV's. But I'm worried about that big reflective surface messing up my 2 channel experience. It would seem a projector screen would be a better surface. I thought about a ceiling mount drop-down screen, but a decent one with tension gets kind of expensive...and they don't look as nice as a fixed screen mounted to the wall.

So, like you - I'm a bit torn with which direction to head. Would love to hear how you ended up.

Does the 1607 have preouts for the front LR?

If you just want a single unit for stereo with the option to handle video switching - have a look at the Classe Sigma integrated. Which is designed exactly for that.

Stereo listening with HDMI switching.

There's also the Sigma SSP which does great 2 channel along with support for 7.2 and HDMI2.0/Atmos (board upgrade should be out soon)

With our recent move to smaller digs, I just finished combining a dedicated 2 channel system and a dedicated 5.1 channel HT system into a single, dual purpose system.

The results so far have been better than both, primarily because of the unique shape of the new room.

Still tweaking, lots of work to do yet, but initial results are promising.

I am using a McIntosh C500T for stereo preamp duty and a McIntosh MX151 for 5.1. They are for all intents and purposes separate systems, with the 151 putting the C500T into pass through mode when enabled.

Josh,
I just fixed the pic. Sorry about that. I'll take better pics this weekend and start a new thread.
