Bart....yes, I've been considering what the options might be. But you know, it's hard to part ways with McIntosh, and the McIntosh components in this room are very sweet.

One of the problems with, say, a McIntosh MX120/MC205 combo is that while they could be squeezed into the rack height and width-wise, they are quite deep, and I'm pretty constrained here.

I'm still exploring the options, there is no hurry. But yes, I find the idea of converting this room into surround mode very tantalyzing.

You wouldn't have to part with your wonderful McIntosh gear Pete.
Your stereo would remain the same (does it have a bypass function?).
You insert a receiver, for example a Marantz, to form a hybrid system.
The receiver does the surround processing, sends its front left and right channel signal to your stereo, and the amplified center and rear current to a center channel speaker and 2 rears.
The center speaker quality should be close to that of your current stereo speakers.
The rears could be quite small, enough to provide the surround effects.

An example of a slim receiver, with good reviews:

Bart....this is an interesting post. I think I get the concept....sort of. At the very least I retain my McIntosh MC2125 amplifier for the fronts-and the receiver powers the centers and rears. But I'm a little fuzzy on what becomes of my existing McIntosh MX117 Tuner/preamp. And, I'm not sure what you mean does the system have a "bypass". I've been a bit confused by some of the jargon in that area-such as "bypass, ht bypass", etc. I think the answer to you question in my case, is "no".

Let's keep talking...this may go somewhere, this "hybrid" approach.

Pete, I'm not a McIntosh specialist.
But if your MX117 has an input that can serve as a "pass-through" (meaning the signal isn't changed), you connect the left and right channel of the receiver with that input.
That way your preamp only serves as a "wire" between the receiver and the McIntosh power amp.
For all stereo duties, it remains in action.

We have a hybrid system in our living room.
I especially asked the designer of my tube amps to provide a "bypass" function.
We do listen quite a lot in surround.
Movies, concerts, multi-channel music: the 3 additional channels are added value in my opinion.

Bart....I don't think my MX117 will have a "pass through" input as you describe. Any signal going through it will be subject to the preamp's volume and other controls.

However, from what I see looking at the back of that Marantz receiver, I may be able to use the Marantz as a the front end of the system, but still use my beloved McIntosh MC2125 amplifier for the front channels (using the marantz amplification for the remaining channels). I would be losing my MX117 (and likely the equalizer that resides in the system) but that's still better than losing two McIntosh components. I see some front channel outputs on the Marantz that I'm thinking could feed the MC2125.

Thanks for your input, I'm still thinking....

Pete, if you are or know a good DIY'er, you might be able to rewire one input to make it a passthrough.
But that might be a hassle.
I don't know how the preamp quality of that Marantz compares to your McIntosh.
Our Marantz prepro has a very good preamp, but we're talking of a different product category here.
Enjoy the journey!
Dreaming of things is already very nice.

Well!
Another in a series of audio practice excellence I see!

Can we all stop by for a listen?

I am curious as well, regarding the surround idea. It seems the hybrid system would need some serious engineering?

Congrats Pete!
